[MTC Global] Chancellor’s unwarranted interference not allowing University function: PU VC

Patna University (PU) Vice Chancellor Y C Simhadri has alleged that the varsity is not able to function properly due to unwarranted interference by the Chancellor and frequent amendments in the university Act.

Replying to a question raised by Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashok Choudhary at the annual meeting of the PU senate here, Simhadri said he is not able to discharge his duties as the VC because of frequent changes in Act and statutes, and also the interference of the chancellor in the working of the university.

"Amendments in the university Act have changed the basic structure of the university and also affected its functioning. That's why funds worth crores of rupees received from the UGC and the state government is not being utilized timely by the university," VC said.

Earlier, Choudhary asked the VC to explain as to why the letter of the Bihar Legislative Council regarding nomination of MLCs to the PU senate was notified after two months and as to why the senators received letters from the university for submission of their questions two days after the expiry of the last date.

Patna College principal Nawal Kishore Chaudhary bemoaned that there is virtually no autonomy in the university and as such the university has to depend on the state government for everything.

"The VC cannot appoint even a Grade IV employee on his own without seeking permission from the government. Two hostels of Patna College, namely, Jackson and Minto hostels, which have been declared heritage buildings, were taken over by the government for necessary repair long back, but nothing has been done so far," he added,ToI reported.
