Re: [MTC Global] Google cannot replace teachers, says UGC Vice-Chairman

Dear All,

Right from the womb of  a  mother, man's life is shaped by many Gurus, mother is of course the first Guru for the child in the womb learns many things from mother, her heart beats, her joy and sorrow too.

Learning is a very complex phenomenon. In fact, there is nothing like teaching in reality. The outcome of teaching is the trained teacher. Learning is not merely collecting data/information  that  is inanimate. Our 5 senses help us to accelerate our data collection. Earlier we had books, notes and guides; today we have ICT tools and tomorrow will see additional tools for continuous improvement advanced tools for learning are required.

The outcome of learning is transformation of data into its deployment in real-life situation to make man's life more comfortable and improved quality of life. It is to be noted the learning trends are set up up-to the age of 8-12 years, later one can be a self-directed missile but these are exceptions like inventors The union of two minds, teacher-taught, is the prerequisite to effective learning. Such emotionally attached learning helps retain the data throughout  life as against the fact that students forget the lessons immediately after the exam. is over.

I still remember that I, a boy of 5- 6 years old, used to sit on the lap of my aunt, she used to tell me stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata, and after hearing one story or so I normally used to embrace sleep.  Hence, in Gurukul system, one of the vital traits of a teacher was s/he loved  students like a mother. During the process of learning objectivity plays  a key role, i.e., relate your data with some living object and a teacher fulfills this need.

Child has a mind. Emotional attachment and union with some object  makes child an effective learner during his formative stage. It is true after certain age, such relationship may not work effectively as the pot is already moulded! In fact, man is a life-long learner, learning directly or indirectly infinite number of things from teachers, parents, friends, relatives, birds, animals, plants, rivers, mountains, etc.

Therefore, the statement made by the honourable VC that Go-ogle cannot replace teachers is neither surprising nor a new concept., but a perennial truth.

Hi,

If the teachers impart only information then Google is a better alternative. Dictating notes from text books which are available online is nothing but sharing information. In fact, even the notes are now available online at various student forums.

In that context, who is a Guru?

The respected VC is absolutely correct in stating that only Gurus can provide proper direction and enable the students to gain knowledge by internalizing and understanding the information they receive from various sources.

The ground reality is whether we have Gurus in our education system and if yes, are they the exception or the rule?

It would be in the better interests of our educational system and our nation is we accepted the short coming of our system and the fact that there are very few of even no Gurus around. It would help us change for the better instead of hiding behind the Guru tag.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) Vice-Chairman H. Devaraj has
underlined the need for imparting quality education to students.

Delivering the convocation address at the 8th annual convocation of Tumkur
University Devaraj said that Google cannot replace teachers and only
'gurus' can give good direction to students.

Instead of depending on information available on Google and the internet,
students should attend classes regularly to enhance knowledge, Devraj said.

Lauding the rich culture and heritage of the country, he called upon the
younger generation to emulate the values and ideals of Indian culture. As
many as 100 'KaushalaKendras' (skill development centres) would be
established across the country to help students, he said, reported Hindu.

Technology (including Google) can put people into a self-learning mode in which the Guru and Shishya become one and the same.
