RE: [VOSAWORLD] Sad News From Cameroon Today ~ A Ghastly Motor Accident Leaves Many Dead

Akuche, thanks for your love 'big heart' for our fellow citizens of Cameroon even when you are thousands of kilometers from mbenge / mboa. This is one accident too bad to be contemplated. It is a big pity that things like this that are avoidable are still happening. This is a wake up call to and sundry both in government, out of government and NGO. If we do nothing, nothing will be done.
May humble suggestion on the way forward to reduce to the barest minimum, the carnage on our roads include the following:
  1.   Establishment of a Road Safety Commission independent of existing setups like police / routie, gendarmes etc, whose responsibilities shall including: a). To educate and enlighten the general public on road safety. b). Ensuring safety on our roads. c). Ensure that drivers' license are issued only to mentally and psychologically fit person apart from passing the driving test. e). Ensure that broken down vehicles are towed off the road within the shortest possible time.
  2. Government to consider the redesign of that dangerous area between Ekona and Muyuka (I would not mind if I am called upon to offer my expertise as a consultant).
  3. Generally highways in Cameroon are too narrow and of obsolete geometric configurations (unnecessary sharp bends, narrow bridges, absence of road signs etc.
  4. Introduction of mandatory speed limit on all vehicles based on type / grass weight....

These amongst others I believe will help minimise these reckless accident. Over here (Nigeria) we have a full effective and functional road safety commission and they are working.

Kind regards

John Mbu

Ps. My brother you must forgive me for not wishing a happy new year. Happy New Year!!!

Subject: [VOSAWORLD] Sad News From Cameroon Today ~ A Ghastly Motor Accident Leaves Many Dead

Family,

I do not know where to begin; when I returned from Cameroon close two weeks ago, I have been talking and writing about SAFETY, HIGHWAY SAFETY and SAFETY of any kind. I have been talking and looking for ways and means how we all, collectively, can come up together with some ideas and financial resources and assist in providing the basic physiological needs of life such as clean drinking water systems, safety awareness, infection control for our people in Cameroon but it appears I am singing or preaching to the wrong choir. I know and believe that we can do it, if and only if we can begin to trust each other.

Family, it is very sad to say the least; this is what happened today in Cameroon. At about 09:00 AM Cameroon time, at the Mile 29 hill shortly after Ekona, in front of the Supermont Factory, along  the Buea - Kumba highway. A bus full with students from the PanAfrican Institute was attempting an overtake of a truck in a deadly area went head-on with an un-coming SVU (PRADA) driven by the wife of the late business guru in Kumba (Fayes) who used to own night clubs and cinemas(movie theaters) in Kumba. __As many as 10 students were killed instantly with some being in critical conditions. __As if things were not bad enough, the driver and Passenger inside the un-coming SVU(PRADA) Mrs. Fayes and her 18 year old daughter were also pronounced dead on the scene. __Someone, please, tell me, is it the bad roads or the people driving on these roads ? (LACK of SAFETY AWARENES or CARELESSNESS)?  This report is coming to me from Cameroon, will update.  Again, folks, pictures don't lie, take a look at a sneak preview. It could have been anyone. I cannot go any further. May their souls rest in peace. Stay tuned.
