VMware Systems Engineer
Description
Senior Consultant responsible for the implementation and on-going technical support of the Staples VMware ESX Enterprise environments. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, day-to-day technical support, proactive monitoring and capacity management, storage and resource management and request/allocation, evaluation of new and emerging technologies, development of standards, and the ability to lead large projects across platform teams. These projects may include upgrades, migrations, Guest OS provisioning, cluster Host scaling, environment integration or deployment, architectural assessment and tuning of existing Guest OSs and/or environments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Proactively monitors infrastructure for optimal performance
Provides input for capacity planning, reports monthly and requests/builds for appropriate needs
Supports development activities and manages projects, and efforts that require specialized infrastructure skills
Defines infrastructure requirements for the implementation of new applications (including storage and network)
Provides technical support for Staples' Lines of Business representatives and IS organizations as required
Maintains relationships with third party technical support providers and vendors
Leads in the evaluation of new products and services
Identifies areas where existing policies and procedures require change or where new ones need to be developed
Develops and maintains policies and procedures, including gap analysis and periodic updates of existing procedures.
Maintains all relevant documentation
Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement
Provide mentoring, ongoing knowledge transfer and other technical guidance to junior and mid level team members
Provides technical support (including participation in a 24x7 on call rotation) for complex production systems and services
Qualifications Basic:
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a senior VMware System Engineer
Expertise with Virtualization build methodologies, performance tuning, storage and memory management, and ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting
Lead large scale projects and enterprise class deployments of VMware and other similar technologies
Good scripting and programming skills (powershell, shell, awk, perl, python)
Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Excellent broad experience in project delivery in large scale enterprises
Preferred:
Masters Degree and 3 years of experience as a VMware System Engineer
Bachelors Degree and 6 years of experience as a VMware System Engineer
VMCE-P certification highly desired
Understanding of Project Management and ITIL v3 methodologies
Experience in developing scalable policies and procedures, including system standards, capacity planning, and centralized management (experience within enterprise environments preferred)
Broad experience with a variety of storage technologies including SAN and NAS storage platforms as well as Networking technologies
Experience with VDI technologies preferred (Citrix, VMware)
Experience with application presentation and streaming preferred (Citrix Presentation Server, Xen Suite, etc.)
