[MTC Global] KTU to introduce cluster autonomy for engineering colleges

The Kerala Technological University (KTU) has decided to introduce cluster autonomy for the conduct of MTech programme, as a lead up to granting autonomy to engineering colleges in state.

The idea of cluster autonomy was discussed in a recent workshop coordinated by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), World Bank and Ministry of Human Resources Development.

"This will be the first step towards granting autonomy to individual institutions. Each cluster will have approximately 10 to 15 colleges and these colleges will be identified based on their geographical location. The cluster will have to formulate procedures for the smooth conduct of all academic activities associated with the MTech programme in line with the regulations of the university,'' Kerala Technological University pro-vice chancellor M Abdul Rahiman said.

These clusters can have academic autonomy regulated by the Cluster Level Graduate Program Committee (CGPC), consisting of principals of the colleges in the cluster. CGPC shall have a chairman nominated by the vice-chancellor of the university and a convener selected by the CGPC. CGPC will be responsible for all academic matters on curriculum, syllabus, course plan, internal evaluation, semester examination, grading as well as result declaration for all the streams of MTech programme offered by colleges in the cluster.

The chairman will be an eminent academician from institutes of national importance (mostly from IITs and NITs). KTU has already formulated 10 clusters, consisting of 15 institutes.

There are 104 institutes in the state which imparts PG courses in engineering (Mtech), ToI reported.
