Re: [MTC Global] Bio Metrics has the solution for Attendance. Agree?

As per UGC Notification of 30 June 2010 the following work-norms are prescribed:
  1. 180 days or 30 weeks academic working per year.
  2. Faculty must be present in University/College at least 5 hours/day on working days.
  3. Teaching load of Asst. Professor: 16 hours/week (or 16 credits/week?).
  4. Teaching load of Associate professor: 14 Hours/week.
  5.  Teaching load of a professor involved in research to be reduced by 2 hours/week.
  6. Every teacher be assigned 6 hours/week for research.
  7. All teachers are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct prescribed by UGC.

How to ensure attendance of teachers for performing the academic tasks effectively?  Muster has been a long practice in vogue and many colleges will have to maintain them for NAAC/NBA accreditation, though the institute might have adopted biometrics attendance. Is it serving the purpose really?  There are many examples that biometrics has been misused visa-vis Muster signing practice. I have seen its discontinuation in institutes and offices like ZP. What are the reasons? Are not these related with integrity, loyalty and commitment of employees towards self, occupation and organization?

Once I have been to a SEFI in Karnataka sometimes in 2009. Biometrics attendance for both students and staff was in practice. At the end of day by 5.30 pm the Principal-table was full of heaps of attendance reports. The Principal was unable to look through all reports and later the practice was dropped.

The technology's value is in direct proportion to the user's capability. Over time, one comes  to think of this as technology's Law of Amplification: While technology helps education where it's already doing well, technology does little for mediocre educational systems; and in dysfunctional institutes, it can cause outright harm. Technology is simply a tool, a means or accessory like a sword, and not an end in itself.  Do not use it because it just happens to be there. Use it judiciously wherever it is necessary.

There is no biometric system at the moment, are we better off. Why did this question came up ? Because of prevalent attendance problem. Faculty quality blamed and N number of reasons have been pointed out for the poor quality of teaching. So the question before us is from where to start the process of transformation or we should remain busy in the blame game and finding faults with every suggestions?

Sir,

Quantity or quality is the issue. Colleges are not prisons. As one of the comment rights says: Teaching is passion and learning is a passion. Bio metric attendance is nothing more than GIGO method in computing. GIGO stands for Garbage In Garbage Out. Bio metric attendance will force the mind to think more to mark the attendance than to focus on learning. So, I am against it.

Prof P.K.Keshap

Good Morning Learned Colleagues,

Its good to have Bio-metric machine for attendance, provided regular monitoring and action follows.

Little difficult to understand the arguments from those people saying that good lectures will attract students.

"Good Lectures will attract good students", not all students. In India only 23% of the students are employable, career oriented and looking for good lecturers.

I feel remaining 77% requires strict rules and regulations, attendance and discipline monitoring, parents attention and continuous vigilance.

This is because of students get sponsorship from parents for their education and extra money spend in canteens and entertainment centers.

Though few students in India are matured enough to understand the responsibility, the majority doesn't understand.

We need quality without sacrificing the quantity, being 1.25 billion population.

Wishing all students and teachers will understand the importance of education.

Do you think that installing Bio Metrics Machines can solve the attendance problem. Many top institutions do not have such arrangements but attendance is good.

UGC made compulsory installing Bio-Metrics machine in the college campus to check attendance and student movement.

Should attendance be made compulsory or otherwise? Even students are not having attendance are made up with late fees.

Students check in the Bio-Metrics but do not attend the classes [Cafeteria/play ground/ hanging around the campus].

Should bio-metrics should installed at the entrance of each classroom?

Or this may not be necessary. We need to focus on the good processes and excellence so that students are inspired to attend the college and then class.
