Re: [MTC Global] India's Higher Education Needs to Change Completely: Former President Abdul Kalam

Am just made to halt & reflect on my days in Ahmedabad a decade ago....just near the RTO near Ranip....evenings a group of prisoner's prepare " Methi (fenugreek leaves) Gota (Pakoda)"...and people would queue up to buy it....it was dellicious/yummilicious...I'm not getting the correct phrase to describe because even my fingers are dancing as I recollect the tasty "Bhajji ( not Harbhajan Singh )". I continued having the same for 5 years before I got transferred out of Ahmedabad.... and I had noticed that the persons (prisoners) who prepared the barter...the prisoners who would fry & take the pakoda's from the big Deep - Kadhaai....the bunch of prisoners who would prepare the Chutney...sieved papaya & kaadhie...the bunch of prisoners who would weight out the pakoda's to customers...electronic weighting scale...with slip handout....the bunch of prisoners in packing department...neatly packing it in newpaper bags..for larger volumes....using newspapers to enfold the same & tie it with white cotton strings...& putting it in plastic bags....everything was methodical...the prisoners seemed to be well trained and what is more....not the same ones....after inquiring there with a PSO while...having a bite there itself...I was informed about the other products made in Sabarmati Prison by the inmates....furnitures, paintings, utility items of brass, kitchen items...there was an entire store...selling made in sabarmati prison items in the heart of the city itself...I visited and saw the products were well made and sturdy...entirely skill....very less use of machinery.... these is in real sense...SKILLING.... the TAALIM....or Training...came from people who had already done it....Tailoring, Footwear making...were other offshot departments added latter on.

The salient feature here is....No Theories..written...Learn from the masters...do it yourself and gain expertise....

That is what we need in our Schools & Institutions...people who hit the street running....not giving out theories of how they would do the task but actually demonstrate this is how I would do it.

Warm Regards,

Stephen

First requirement is to make existing ITIS and Vocational Training Centers productive so that 100% youth coming out of them are good at their skills. So is not the case at the moment. These centers do not have latest machines being used in the industry or required for precision work, they do not have sufficient and skilled staff and they are knee-deep in corruption.

Dear All,

Vishvakarma, the first engineer in Indian mythology, responsible for creating infrastructure, has 5 sons Manu, Maya, Twashta, Sculptor, and Daivadnya, the professional craftsmen. Later 12 “Balutedars” emerged like carpenter, black-smith, gold smith, potter, barber, weaver, tailor, mochi, etc. These 12 craftsmen were responsible making Indian villages and towns economically self-sustained. However. Lord Macaulay  cruelly broke this system in mid-18th century.  Mahatma Gandhiji during 1930 introduced the concept of “Nai Talim” imparting skills to youth like in Sut Katai, weaving, furniture making, etc.

India, the 2nd largest populous country in the world, is soon reaching to 125 crore population. India is the youngest country having over 60% of her population in the age group 6-35 years. India has been facing a severe challenge since independence how to bring the Aam Adami above the poverty line.  Providing work to many hands is a great national challenge. Bharatratna M Visvesvarya advocates that a student leaving a course of study must support to him/her-self and family. Adults in  advanced countries like USA, Germany, UK, etc.,in the age group 15-18 start earning to support their both  livelihood and educational expenses;  unlike the Indian adults who are fully supported by their parents. Countries like China, Switzerland, Germany, Korea have introduced Vocational Education and Training (VET) in a big way that is being reflected in a higher rate of employment, quality rich life, national prosperity, etc. India has been initiating promotion of VET so as to improve employ-ability, and prosperity of the country as a whole. The AAP Government of Delhi has taken an unprecedented lead in the matter. 70 Point Action Plan and AAP Manifesto-2015 speak well about such initiatives.

We have a very few ITI's only 10,250.  We Train about 1.2 million people per year. But we have 40,000 colleges!!!  Indian mind is wrapped, we have a fetish for college degrees. Many of our engineers work as clerks in banks. China has 500,000 VET centers, 90% in rural China, training 90 million people per year. Even the small country like Switzerland has 60000 VET centers. Let India aim at generating earning youths right from the age 15-16 years or so, self-supported and supporting the family too. This is achieved in all advanced countries like USA, Germany, France, UK, etc. Then why not in India?

Introspect: From here to where we need go.

Regards.

NEW DELHI:  Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today advocated a "complete" change of the higher education framework in the country and stressed on skill development to come up with a workforce to meet future challenges.

Speaking on the occassion of the third Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar in New Delhi, Dr Kalam suggested that students in schools and colleges be handed over "skill certificates" apart from the conventional degrees.

"In decades time, India will need 300 to 500 million employable skilled youth and there is a need to completely change the university education syllabus and secondary school education syllabus," he said.

Dr Kalam also known as the 'Missile Man' for his contribution to Indian Guided Missile Development programme further said, "Two certificates should be given to students. In schools, one skill certificate and one education certificate and in college, degree and diploma on the expertise acquired. In schools from class 9 to 12, 25 per cent of the time has to be alloted for skill development programme".

Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal were also present in the event in which 15 teachers from different government schools of Punjab were awarded.
