Re: [MTC Global] Neo-Liberal Education

Reminds me of something.

I was told during my selection to MBA program ....you have the right attitude.

But I was never liked for my independence and different thinking.

I was told confrom...I have been struggling ever since....

Until one fine day...two years ago...I gave up

Now I am ....who I am....

I think differently..and I really don't care..wasted too many precious years...caring..

The views are absolutely right. In Ashtang Yoga the 5th fold is Pratyahar that connects the first four fold to remaining three. Pratyahar means dieting. Training of both mind and senses in a desired direction.

The sole purpose of education is training of mind so that a man can achieve total evolution. This concept of education is repeatedly advocated from the time immemorial. In Taitriya Upanishads the Guru advises the the disciples at the end of course termed as valedictory function that you just forget whatever I have taught you. Please speak truth, have pious behaviour, be a worthy element of society, have the power of reasoning, have right attitude and right habits, support yourself, your family and society at large, etc.

It is interesting to note that Bharatranta Sir M Visvesvaraya expressed the same or similar views about the purpose of education. Mind building is the main purpose of education. In the Gurukul system as good as 64 Vidyas (Kalas/subjects) were taught including music, literature, dancing, weaponry, judiciary, etc. The purpose was to train the mind for holistic thinking. In turn, the purpose of education is to churn out thinkers who can mould the healthy and prosperous society. Several skills like writing, communication, positive attitude, reading, arguments, etc. are developed through education that are required as basics for any profession.

Training, however,  is necessary to train physically or mentally in such a  manner that one gets proficiency in a desired profession, It is repeatedly practicing certain activities so that something like habits are developed. We are living in a society where earning capacity is preferred that needs certain skills and so applicable to employability. Enhancing employability or earning capacity is just one of the outcomes of education but not the sole objective of education. It is the system and public mind set that greatly affects our approach towards education. We are part of parcel of capital type of social structure, more oriented towards financial gains. Here we are making a mistake. Can you imagine what will happen if there are no poets, writers to the world? The world cannot develop squarely. Even to day, in today's profiteering world, one can easily point out that the person at the top of the helm of affairs is hardly from enginering, management, medical or other professional disciplines.

As I mentioned earlier there are certain concepts independent of time and do exist in all ages. Such concepts have nothing like neo-liberal sort of things. If we are hammering as the employability is the sole criterion of education, are we on the right path in terms of long horizons or our future generations?
