Re: [MTC Global] A professor's worth can be known with the help of a research article submission to a reputed journal

My Dear Colleagues,
With due respect to all of you, I beg to write a few lines on the role of a Professor and/or a researcher. Motivation for this submission has been gathered from the tag line of this discussion.

Society expects that a Professor should come out with valuable research findings which will throw new lights on the issue/problem on which research has been conducted. This is the most acceptable way (for the academician) of providing services to the society.

Certainly, one may ask question about the effectiveness of a particular research paper. Assuming that it has addressed an unsolved research problem, the contribution of the paper may not be readily visible. We may have to go a long way to experience the effectiveness of the paper.
However, all published papers may not satisfy the above mentioned condition. For those which do not satisfy the above condition, I have nothing to say. But when some researcher claims that he/she has been contributing to the society through conducting research and publishing the research findings (relating to an unresolved issue) in the form of research papers, we should not contest that claim.

In other ways also one teacher may contribute to the society. But such contribution should be regarded as over and above the normal duties which he/she is expected to perform.
Last but not the least, according to some study, not more than 5/6 per cent of the published research outputs in India are even publishable. In some developed nations, not more than 5% of the published research outputs are meaningful for application in real life situations.

Hence, I need to stand in front of a mirror and to put the question before my ethical self in respect of  my contributions to the society. I hope, I can get the answer.
Best regards,

Yes  it  is  very  right.  Only  to  write  a  good  research  paper is  not  too sufficient. As  an  academician  we  need to  execute directly in society.  There  are  so  many  excellent   research   article  in  reputed  journal  but  how  many  benefited  with  it.

Dear Professor Appalayya Meesala,

In my opinion there are a lot of other areas that contribute to and are important for a professor or an academician to prove or  improve his or her overall worth , for which genuine and good quality research is one. Submission to a journal of repute and the feedback  can help look at areas where the person can improve in his researcher and writing.

However there are senior academicians and professors who may not be great researchers but are wonderful teachers administrators and guides. Parameters for measuring the real worth are many and need to be looked at from many angles.
Best Regards

A research article submission to a reputed journal  will show the real worth of a professor.

A professor can learn a lot from the comments of the editor. The comments will unearth the areas where professor has to improve.

This happens only if it is a reputed journal which has a rigorous review process. There are many online and local journals whose review process is just nominal  and they don't help.

Suggestion:

Do research, develop a good article, submit to a good journal,  get the comments, and work on them.

Even a rejection also helps you a lot when the rejection comes with a constructive criticism and suggestions.
