Re: [MTC Global] Will the decision of ranking Engineering & MBA Institutions improve the quality or prove as just guidelines for getting admissions to the said course?

The public has some notion about the quality in the order of:

  1. IIT/IIM/IISc
  2. NITs
  3. State Colleges
  4. 2-5 Private Institutes per state.
  5. All other private institutes.

Ranking of colleges in such categories as A+, A, B+, B or C or in terms of 5 Stars or so does not serve much purpose because:

  1. Evaluation may be biased.
  2. Public save a very small part of elites is aware of the ranking.
  3. Ranking significantly affects of education costs especially in private sector.
  4. Public select private institutes because of the ambiance/culture/scope for career development and not necessarily because mainly quality of education imparted by institute.
  5. A large number of students/parents to the tune of 60-60% are contented with what they get nearby local institutes, at least it is rewarding to do engineering/management rather than BA, BSc, BCom, etc.
  6. Such an exercise was done by the Govt. of Maharashtra in mid 1995 or so, but later died on its own.
  7. Some universities have very good NAAC Ranking like Five Stars, that are open to public assessment.
  8. Ranking of all institutes is a Herculean task, almost impossible to achieve the 100 % targets every year. Mere  ranking based on documents has been proving misleading and futile. MHRD will have to approve private accreditation 8-10 agencies for the task. It appears agencies like NBA, NAAC or MHRD alone cannot take up the complete assignment for obvious reasons. The agencies need to  be tough with full and trained HR expertise for the job.
  9. Private institutes have contributed a lot to improve economical status of universities by way of annual approval fees, examination and other fees, revaluation or re-totalling  (a good source of revenue), etc., and of course to some extent to individuals too.

Will the decision of ranking Engineering & MBA Institutions improve the quality or prove as just guidelines for getting admissions to the said course?

MHRD announced its National Institutional Ranking Framework on 29th September 2015 for ranking Engineering & MBA Institutions in India, which would be released before the next academic year before the admission to the said course.
