In the wake of incidents of sexual harassment of girl students by teachers in Mysuru district in the recent past, the Education Department has decided to hold a series of special meetings at the cluster-level to sensitise teachers about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and to insist on a safe, protective environment for schoolchildren. The headmaster of a government school at Siddalingapura on the outskirts of the city was thrashed by village residents for the alleged sexual harassment of a student on Wednesday.
This is not an isolated incident in Mysuru district in the last one year but over nine incidents of teachers harassing children sexually were reported in the district. The department had conducted a special training programme for teachers at different level few months ago and had made efforts to create awareness among teachers about the POCSO Act.
Teachers will be educated chiefly about higher punishment under the provisions of the Act if they commit sexual offences against children.
S. Chandra Patil, Deputy Project co-ordinator, Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan, said here on Thursday that teachers would be enlightened about public ire that they may have to incur if they commit such offences besides projection in electronic and print media. Makkala Suraksha Samitis in all schools would be further strengthened and more representation, particularly to girl students, would be given in such committees to expose the 'misconduct' of the teachers, he said.
The department has already written to the government to provide grants to install CCTV cameras at strategic points in all the government schools, Mr. Patil said and he noted that most of the private schools have already installed CC TV cameras in the district.
