[MTC Global] Mann ki baat: Make India ‘Startup Capital’ of world, says Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his government's plans to unveil the 'Start up India' scheme on January 16.

In his 15th 'Mann ki baat' radio address — his last for this year — Modi stressed on the need for innovation and sought suggestions for the scheme from youngsters to turn the country into a 'Startup Capital' of the world.

"This year on Independence Day from the Red Fort, I talked about Startup India at its preliminary level. Since then, departments and ministries in the government started thinking about it. But I think such initiative should not be limited only to Information technology, rather it should be in manufacturing, agriculture and service sectors. I have asked banks to encourage such startup initiatives," Modi said.

"On January 16, the government of India will unveil the full Action Plan of Start-up India, Stand-up India... A structure will be presented before you. This programme will be connected to the country's IITs, IIMs, central universities and NITs. Wherever there are youth, they will be linked through 'live connectivity," the prime minister said.

The programme is aimed at promoting bank financing for start-up ventures and offer incentives to boost entrepreneurship and job creation.

The prime minister appreciated a villager from Madhya Pradesh — Dilip Singh Maliviya — a mason who builds toilets in his village, Bhojpura, for no charge at all, for his contributions to the 'Clean India' campaign.

Modi also lauded the efforts of a visually challenged schoolteacher from Ahmedabad Dilip Chavan for encouraging students to help the differently-abled.

The differently-abled have "stronger senses" than other people, he said. "Since the God has provided them special strength, we should call them Divyang (the divine bodied)," he suggested.

Reminding citizens of upcoming Republic Day on January 26, the Prime Minister stressed the need to highlight duties instead of rights.

"Incidentally, in India we talk about our rights most of the time ignoring our duties. Why can't we make duties part of our everyday lives? Can't we organise writing competition of the subject?" he said.  (With inputs from PTI)
