Re: [MTC Global] [Must Read] Will the GATS close on higher education?

"How can a democracy protest for its rights when its government has relinquished its power to concede?"

WTO and/or GATS has got a central term "Trade".  Trade is always profit based. Service providers-good or bad- will be after their share and this share can be controlled to some extent by the local Govts. provided they are visionary, statesman  and diplomatic.

Are not the following statements creating need (?) for Trade/Services  in developing countries like India?

  1. With half its (India's) people below the age of 25, it faces the challenge of educating its youth and preparing them for taking up employment both within the country and outside.
  2. Talk of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio in Higher Education from the present 13 per cent to 30 per cent by 2020 may, for instance, remain a pipe dream.
  3. A level playing field is what the GATS would enforce, but the field would be level only for the traders, not for society at large
  4. Developed countries with ageing populations, and which thus have a growing skill crunch, may try to succeed in siphoning away students from the affluent section, who manage (This will come at a cost, as it would also exacerbate the brain drain issue.to acquire skills) for employment.

Be wary of the pitfalls and win them over! To me WTO and GATS is the modern sophisticated weapon of invasion. Its effects can be checked through such means as societal welfare being the central point, sacrifices, renunciation, trusteeship, patriotism, and utilization of funds collected by various religious places  like temple, churches, Masjid, etc.
