[MTC Global] Gurgaon principal takes lead, pedals his way to college

At 57, Dr Ram Kishan, the principal of a government college in Gurgaon, is out to spread an eco-friendly message by using cycle to commute between home and office every day.

Ever since he took over as principal of the Dronacharya College last month, Dr Kishan has been commuting to work on bicycle. One of the highest paid academicians of the Haryana government, Dr Kishan leaves his home at Sector 56 at 8am on his cycle worth Rs. 3,000 and pedals 12 kilometres to his college at New Railway Road. As against 30 minutes by car, Dr Kishan takes about 45 minutes to reach his office.

"It will take nearly 30 minutes by car, depending on the traffic on the road. And when I take the cycle, I reach the college in 45 minutes. Not only do I save fuel and contribute in curtailing pollution, but I also get the health benefits," Dr Kishan, who is an economist, said.

He leaves college at 5:30pm. On a working day, Dr Kishan pedals 24 kilometres between home and office.

"I also save time, as I do not need to go for my morning walk. So I get at least two extra hours to spent at the college," he said.

Dr Kishan, who was instrumental in establishing the first girl's college in the neighbouring Mewat district, which is nearly 57 kilometres from Gurgaon, joined Dronacharya College on December 5 last year and started cycling to college two days later.

"If I take the lead, at least some people will be inspired to take up the environmental cause that also comes with health benefits," he said.

And to take it forward, the principal had also issued an advisory to his college faculty and students to commute to college campus on bicycle at least once a week.

"We have nearly 7,500 students in our college. It's examination time now and I think once the next session starts, a number of students will follow it," Dr. Kishan added.

Dr Kishan said educational institutions of India should also learn the healthy habit of using bicycles on campuses from universities in western countries.
