Ladies & Gentlemen,
It is part of our routine , visiting our loved ones admitted to hospital. Very often we are unhappy with the standards of care. In several instances, we are not familiar with basic questions to ask the medical staff in order to ascertain whether basic standards of care are met.
Fako Heart is a superspecialist cardiac unit to be launched this year in Buea. The Consultant Cardiologist has extensive experience on an international scale and is keen to empower the community as part of a give back and charity work to our people in memory of his son who was a proud supporter of Cameroon and keen to work at Fako Heart.
Therefore, Fako Heart will continue to provide useful tips to the wider community with a view to highlighting the standards of care you expect from a healthcare facility.
Below are some key aspects we would like you to keep in mind at all times.
When you or your loved one is in hospital, please ask the doctor to provide you with the following:
a) Safety aspect - medication review, assessment of risk of clot formation, make sure IV (INTRAVENOUS) access is clean and functional
b) Make sure the patient is having appropriate rehydration. For example, if diabetic, avoid indiscriminate infusion of glucose solution.
c) Effective care: Ask about blood test and the results- this is crucial. Ask about the findings on the Xray
d) Proper Care: Ensure that your loved one is not in pain, if not ask the medics to do what ever it takes to ease pain
e) It is expected that hygiene standards are met at all times. Make sure you verify this aspect.
The above is to provide you with an idea of the standards of care you should expect from a healthcare provider. These are the minimum essentials. If lacking, then the level of care is suboptimal.
Hope this helps
