Dear All
The title B Schools of the future will call for all the above mentioned activities is a misnomer. These activities are not pertaining to the future of b school but to the present it self. It is not the future, it is the present.
In many schools today,
the Learning Management System -- LMS has already been implemented and is in force.
The LMS forces the faculty to upload the presentations, the attendance sheet, the discussions points, the case studies etc.
Additionally through the lms the student can view the presentations at any point from any where provided he has the internet connection in place. Assignments are also uploaded and the teacher can view them and grade them on line.
The student has the facility to appraise the teacher confidently and anonymously lecture by lecture or even as a semester as a whole.
The days where the teacher used to read from the presentations or the chalk and black board principle is gone and dead. This is not acceptable even in the UG programs leave alone B Schools.
The student desires that the principles be taught and immediately supplemented by live examples of the corporate world.
One should be able to corelate the practical world happenings with the principles of management that we teach.
Additionally students desire that they should be given live projects wherein they are able to interact and if possible work in these organizations say for some time.
Students today are desirous of a holistic development. Such developments include activities like working with the down trodden or developing the entrepreneur skills etc. Participation in camps like blood donation, medical check up camps etc are also the need of the hour.
Guest lectures or talks by industry leaders or industry personnel -- not retired personnel-- but people who are still working in the industry and who are able to link the activities within the organizations with the management principles are essentially desired. Let us not have cases where one retired industry personnel said that Micheal Porter's value chain analysis and the 5 force field analysis is not at all used in any industry. The truth however is the opposite. Both these concepts are very much used and are live in any growing or mature industry even today.
Again it is a cycle, data analytics tools are important but they are not the end of the day as some of us would like us to believe. The B schools must focus in teaching only the basics of analytics and leave the higher levels to specialists. This is the need of the hour.
Our pedagogy need not contain everything but only minimum and essential items. For e.g. one need not teach neural analysis but one must teach the essentials of statistics like finding the mean, analysis of time series etc .
In many b schools the faculty talks about strategies in marketing but forgets to even mention that the strategies is dependant on segmentation of the market and competitive scenarios
Where does the future lies?
In B Schools, the future lies in understanding the innovations that are taking place -- new products -- understanding the consumer behavior-- understanding that social network and social networking marketing are the future.
I see a scenario, where the students would be told to attend classes twice a week and the next two days spend time in the market place and the next two days present their learnings from the market place with the class dissecting the same and understanding the same. Audio Visual cues -- use of mobile phones / internet etc would be highest.
Understanding Political science, ethical behavior, volatile financial markets and a decrease in product life cycle would be the norm of the day. (Like the electronic industry, where product life cycles are shrinking day by day)
With the growth of internet, e sites and e commerce is something which is going to grow at a tremendous pace, new lifestyle problems / diseases are going to grow. Whether one likes it or not, work life balance is going to seriously be affected both at the schools as well as the industry. New solutions to various diseases / problems which will reduce the separation between say ayurvedic and allopathy medicines or between the traditional medicines and the allopathy medicines would disappear.
Students in MBA pharma and MBA biotech would have to evolve new techniques to blend the east with the west.
Students in Marketing would have to relearn the basics while the students of HR will have to live with a new breed of employees who believe that loyalty is something of the past. These employees would have a yearning for learning for new things and who believe that "what I learnt yesterday is past, what I learn today is nearing the past and what I should learn tomorrow is the success mantra"
