[MTC Global] Re: Pokémon Go Shows the Way: How to Reach Smartphone Generation!!!!

Dear All,
Here is What Pokémon GO Teaches Us About Winning In The Workplace....as per an article published by Meghan M. Biro.

Compensation models were built on basic formulas including years with the company and job titles. Over time, compensation and incentive plans have increased in complexity with myriad variables including performance, education, awards, referrals and other factors.

But what is changing the most isn't the actual depth of the spreadsheets, but what people actually want. #winning incites nervous laughter from many people who remember those awkward Charlie Sheen months when that he "owned" that hashtag. But he was onto something. Who doesn't want to be #winning? The giant difference is what you think #winning means.

So that brings us to Pokémon GO. Love it or hate it, it has permeated our culture with divisive strength and power with more than 15 million downloads in a few weeks. Even Hillary Clinton is opting to host an event at a Pokémon gym. It can easily be called a cultural phenomenon. What is it, exactly?

Pokémon GO is a reality mobile game developed by Niantic and published by The Pokémon Company as part of the Pokémon franchise. It is free and can be played on iOS and Androids, which opens a lot of doors for players everywhere. Wikipedia states, "The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, who appear throughout the real world. It makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices."

So how can Pokémon GO compel people to walk all over town in packs, capturing little creatures? Why are kids congregating in parking lots, churches, parks? Why do people want to train and take over gyms that aren't even real gyms? To WIN! Obviously.

So let's make a correlation to the workplace. At first, players need to train (think onboarding) and then move up levels (think promotions), but then it's important to gather Pokémon (think recommendations, awards, etc.) to be able to level up.

At the fifth level, allegiance begins. This is when people start to consider how they can win. Haven't you done that in your career? Did you ever forgo a certain amount of money to be on the best, brightest team? Whether that means one with better promise or one that aligns more with your values? Personal definitions of winning come into play at this stage of the game and the career ladder.

In today's workplace, these thoughts about "winning" are coming earlier. The path may be all over the place or scientifically linear, but just like in Pokémon GO, decisions need to be made. What drives you? What does success look like? It's not just money anymore. One company, Payscale, is taking a hard look at modern compensation models, teaching us that the pay business isn't just about spreadsheets anymore. It's about what people actually need and want to feel successful.

Oops – get back to the game! Whether you think of yourself as a Mergers & Acquisitions type of guy or gal, in Pokémon GO, the mission to take over gyms is the obvious next step. You must be ready to battle. You must have trained well and be knowledgeable. But it's what is necessary to keep climbing the corporate – or I mean Pokémon – ladder. What do you want to take over? A department? A business? An entire industry? Your own destiny?

But get this – what helps players conquer these gyms? A solid team. Leaders/players have to power up and train their teams to be strong. Sound familiar?  It's hard to win without a great team. Never forget that on the quest to win. Never.

And what is the most common way to fall from grace? We've seen it from leaders in all industries over all time: getting cocky and not watching the competition. Pokémon GO requires players to size up the competition, know what tools trump others, and how to be effective in battle based on stats and other factors.

So whether winning to you is comprised of Pokécoins, money, freedom, mobility or other measures of wealth, I hope you win with grace. And good on ya, Nintendo. Let's just say that all parties involved in the launch are #winning, even if they are stressing out about the explosive growth and all that goes along with it.

Cheers,
