Kolhapur: The Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) has welcomed the new guidelines issued by University Grants Commission (UGC) allowing external or undergraduate supervisors for PhD guidance.

SUK was pursuing the demand with UGC since the last academic year when only post graduate college teachers were permitted to supervise PhD scholars.

The new guidelines issued earlier this month clarified that any regular professor of the university or institution deemed to be a university or college with at least five research publications in refereed journals and any regular associate, assistant professor of the university/institution deemed to be a university/college with a PhD degree and at least two research publications in refereed journals may be recognized as research supervisor.

The UGC has also relaxed norms in disciplines where there are limited or no number of referred journals, they are likely to further relax the condition of appointing a research scholar for the same.

"The guidelines have specified that a full time regular teacher of the concerned university/institution can only act as a supervisor. The external supervisors are not allowed. However, co-supervisor can be allowed in inter-disciplinary areas or from other departments from the same institute with approval of research advisory committee," the UGC mentioned.

The allocation of Research Supervisor for a selected research scholar shall be decided by the department concerned depending on the number of scholars per research supervisor.
