Re: Two arrested in Njinikom over Signature referendum

Mr Fonjong,
The Two arrested were Chia Samuel Awoh a worker with ELECAM in Njinikom and Madame Mary Amkiambom a worker with Njinikom Council. They were both released on bail and Sam says he spent up 60000 francs to be released just as Mola has said "I suspect this is the usual corruption trick to terrorize people and extort bribes," It is what has just happened. Prior to his arrest Sam had told me he had already 1250 signatures.  Talking with my other agent in Njinikom he says the arrest has instead created more awareness and he has an avalanche of people pouring in to sign. Every cloud has a silver lining. But Sam's greatest fear is that he may lose his job. I shall drive down to Fundong and Njinikom tomorrow to have an on0ther-spot appraisal... Maybe to arrested too.

Hi Mola
Can you please provide me with details of those arrested? Under what circumstances they were arrested. When were they arrested?

Can you also despatch all the signed forms? If they see the forms, they will cease them. It will mean a chunk of signatures lost.

Please kindly take the forms away from your house and leave them with someone they might not even think of.

Please, keep me updated. And get a group of lawyers aware of the situation. Also get some guards.....some sort of trusted security guys around. These guys can come at night or very early in the morning. So, be prepared for them.

Keep us updated and leave some key contact details to an aide of yours. That aide should contact and inform us of anything that could happen with you.

Thanks
Callistus

Subject: Re: Two arrested in Njinikom over Signature referendum

I think it was Mr Samuel Awoh who telephoned me this afternoon to report that he was waiting to be arrested for filling Signature Referendum forms, and that the Gendarmes in Buea were reported  to be organizing to come and arrest me too.  I informed him that I am waiting to receive them, but up till 8.45pm, nobody has visited me at my residence.

I suspect this is the usual corruption trick to terrorize people and extort bribes, for I cannot see the crime in signing a piece of paper.   I hope these actions of LRC would not convert a simple peaceful operation into  violent disorder. I am waiting to receive them, but they had better count the cost of causing a breach of public peace!

Hostages released
Chia Samuel Awoh and Mart Ankiambom who were arrested by the Fundong Gendarems have been released. But Sam says they have bee released on bail and fears losing his job with ELECAM on that score. Just talked with Sam on phone Eric Baisi one other agent tells me the arrest has sparked up an unprecedented awareness and people are crowding by him to sign the Referendum form.

Chia Samuel Awoh and  a certain Mary were arrested by the Gendarme elements from Fundong Company. They are presently still being interrogated or detained at the Gendarmerie. Prior to the arrest Sam had called me that he was about to be arrested. An overzealous citizen from Njinikom had gone to the Brigade in Njinikom and reported that Sam and this lady were administering the Signature Referendum. The Njinikom Gendarmes raided Sam's office (he works with ELECAM)_ searched and carried away many of the forms they saw. Luckily they never took those that had been signed already and Sam told me he had already more than 1250 signatures. I have called his number over and over. It is ringing but no one speaks. He last told me he was going to talk back to me but since then.
I shall monitor the situation and by tomorrow go down and join him in the cell since I gave him the forms.;
