Re: [MTC Global] Skill Gaps for Teacher--- A serious concern than Skill Gaps for Students

Dear All,

What do we understand by the term skill?

Skill stands for:

Sustained Knowledge Integrating Lessons Learned (SKILL).

Why do we need it? Is it not for quality performance? Performance is a function of (Skill and Motivation). In the absence of either or both, performance is bound to be poor. Skills can be broadly classified into mental and Physical skills which further can be categorized into job-specific skills like teaching skills, generic skills, life-long learning skills, leadership/managerial skills, life-skills, etc.

To me, motivation plays the key role because if a man is motivated he can acquire the relevant skills. Five decades ago, the faculty, infrastructure, facilities, communication, etc., were not as glorious as of now, but the quality of HE is going down and down and costs up as the time passes. What is the root cause?

The root cause is lack of motivation. Motivation emerges from within, self actualized. Self actualization is path dependent, namely, it is significantly influenced by one's values and culture where money plays but a little role. Skills are also time dependent. Skill for handling OHP or Projector is a time function. Thus, requirements of skills are dynamic and variant. Change or adaption is the only constant in education process like any other sector.

To make it simple, a teacher needs fulfillmdnt of four pre-requisites: Pious conduct, domain knowledge, teaching skills and love for students. Bhagwatgeeta specifies 5 life skills:

5 life lessons Krishna teaches us:

1. Do your karma

Having hopes/being optimistic is not wrong, but without actions, your path

will be dreadful. The art lies in walking the tightrope and enjoy doing it.

If the guy who walks the literal tightrope is scared or too excited, he will

certainly fall. The trick to his success is that he enjoys it while he walks in

order to reach the other end successfully.

2. Master the art of adaptation

Do not get stuck with your initial vision. Learn to adapt, innovate and

implore new opportunities. Pave your journey like a traveler, who is not

attached to the city he visits or the hotel he stays in but enjoys the

experience of it all. Do not be adamant; be innovative, open minded and

ready to absorb experiences like a sponge. The faster you adapt to a change,

the better it is. Remember, change is the only constant.

3. Manage your anger

With anger goes away our ability to reason and we tend to become

delusional. The confusion and chaos generated by anger leads to memory loss. The individual is moved away from his purpose and goals. Never lose your focus and never underestimate the virtue of patience.

4. Detach yourselves

Too much desire can be bad, as it turns into greed. Greed takes you away from your true calling and dream, be it to achieve, create or innovate. Do not be super attached to your work, as it makes your journey as an entrepreneur difficult and closed.

5. Do not be misled

Knowledge is covered with desire that we must ignore or get rid of.

We must ignore the curtain of desire in order to imbibe knowledge that will help us grow. This isn't as easy as it looks but wise man is one who knows what to avoid and what to select.

what are the ways open?

  1. Achieve at least 90% of teaching target (T/P) set for a Semester of minimum 12 weeks, e.g., if I have the teaching load (T and P) of say 16 hours/week, my target is 12*16*0.9 = 173 hours/semester.
  2. Pre-service training of 6 months and once a year in-service training through STTP and industrial training of 3 months in a block of 2 years.
  3. Fair recruitment process.
  4. Minimize the skill gap though uninterrupted continuous improvement process, but it can never be brought down to zero!
