Re: [MTC Global] Can Generic Medicines bring about qualitative change in health?

Dear Mr. Narayanan,
Most of us donot know that a particular drug would be declared spurious if it contained less than 90 per cent of the ingredient. So, without hesitation ask your doctor to prescribe generic medicines. The medicine cost would become 5 to 10 fold less (10 to 20 per cent of prescription medicines). I would like you to tell your friends and relatives to insist doctors to prescribe generic medicines. That would help Indian drug companies, mostly small and medium scale companies, remain healthy and India's self reliance in pharmaceuticals would remain in tact.

Subject: [MTC Global] Can Generic Medicines bring about qualitative change in health?

I have been hearing about Generic Medicines from quite a lot of people these days. Often the person who passes knowledge about this never fails to cricize how these MNC's who set up Research Labs actually fleece the people in the name of curing.

My mind goes back to my childhood days in Vadodara (Gujarat). During those days, we often used to visit our family Doctor as we would call him - Dr.C.D. Bhuptani. A very genial gentleman who would not only put you through a thorough check up examining the tongue, eyes, pulses and perhaps other analysis through stethoscope. After he would be through with the check-up, he would prescribe some medicines which his own compounder bring from the innumerous plastic bottles which would contain several different colorful tablets, pills etc. And his medicines would be quite effective and his charges - looking back were just peanuts. Now it strikes me that generic medicines currently debated were available all along but only few dedicated Doctors would take the pain of maintaining their own Medicine Dispensary whereas it is more convenient to oursource it through Chemist Shops where the Company would keep a tab on prescriptions coming for their drugs from the nearby Doctors and in return the Doctors would also be well looked after with gratifications and rewards.
The state of the CGHS ( Central Government Health Services ) in Capital is highly deplorable. Young Interns have taken over from the older Doctors and these Gen-nxt Doctors hardly bother to use the stethoscope or feel the pulse. They just hear out what the patient's complaint and prescribe common medicine for the affliction which mostly would be general symptom based presciptions.

Now with the small time domestic drugs manufacturing companies where perhaps there would not be proper checks and balances to certify on the quality of their production, the question is : How safe are the so called generic drugs?
