Re: [MTC Global] HBR : Why Some People Get Burned Out and Others Not

Dr Asokan

Thanks very much for sharing this research work. The article has very rightly pointed out that one should not be too harsh on
oneself. Often we set high level of expectations and targets for ourselves. If we are a perfectionist and we are unable to achieve
the targets then it leads to thoughts of self persecution and guilt. In the academic world where we use our brain all the time, setting
unrealistic goals and targets can be fatal. We need to empathise with the student community, tone down our expectations from them and also stop being harsh on ourselves.

Every second college will want you to either take part in a conference or write a research paper. Writing a research paper itself is an emotionally draining experience. In some cases, when the person is a perfectionist such kind of target-based living can wreak havoc on the mental health. This kind of stress sometimes connects different kinds of FFAS. [Fears, frustrations and anxieties]. We also end up over eating when we are anxious and spoil our health.

We are all here in this world to be happy and spread happiness. Besides the mindful meditation exercises (while listening to a song think how the singer is delivering it with panache), I think it is important to be physically fit. Physical fitness and mental fitness go hand in hand. Going for evening/ morning walks, learning to meditate and relax, listening to music, playing with toddlers, practising yoga and breathing exercises are also time-tested remedies for such maladies.

I feel as Indians we are all privileged to have a strong spiritual background - whatever be our religion. We can learn so much from each religion - be it Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Zorastrian, Sikhism etc. It is this spiritual inclination that will help us fight the demons within us.
