Re: [MTC Global] What are your top three grumbles about contemporaryhigher education?

Mostly all Higher Education Institutes ( those offering PGDM/MBA) have their own Admission Celll who do cut-throat competitive Marketing to corner students from U.P., Bihar, North East, West Bengal & Orissa - the prime catchment areas. Very less students from Himachal and Uttarakhand as they have good establishment and are satisfied with hometown opportunities. These admission - marketing cell go overboard in trying to grab major share of students and here there are also local educational counselors who collaborate with institutes who offer them a good commission. Yes, some agents or admission managers you may call try to dictate in admission process wanting students who do not have potential to be enrolled ( to safeguard their commission ). Thus it is rightly pointed out by our member Sabareesh on this point.
Other irritant could very well be the class of students itself. If it is not a homogeneous mixture of bright students and very high polarity in levels, it would frustrate the faculty all the more.I had touched on this in my discussion on the recent UGC released list of top delhi colleges.
MDP, EDP & FDP are areas which many institutes are aiming not just for furthering knowledge but as a means of extra earnings with commissions being earmarked for the faculty conducting the program. If this becomes a regular feature, faculty would disturbed in their own teaching preparation for their regular students.
But I guess the main irritant is the human nature itself. Inability to accept other colleagues view points and constant criticism, negativity which destroys the work atmosphere. I have come across many faculties in different institutions who don't seem to accept the HOD's or Dean and engage in constant criticism and discouraging and disparaging remarks on their abilities and capacities.

According to me, One as a Faculty Member could be irritated when  agents who get students to these colleges threaten the dept staff to obey his orders as these Agents pose as though they are the lifeline and the survival causes for these institutions.

Another one could be when students attempt to use approach their teacher offering cash or kind to compensate their attendance.

These are really disgraceful acts.

Dear All,
Happy New Year Greetings--2017

I'm interested in knowing what are the things that irritate, annoy or give people working in higher education their highest degree of concern. They can be to do with any aspect of higher education from policy/governance to teaching and learning, through research and onto students and beyond. It'd be interesting to get a bit of a handle on just what it is that we grumble about!

Cheers!!!
