The intense speculation over whether the budget will be presented today after the death of former union minister E Ahamed has come to an end. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has given her nod to the budget, news agency ANI reported.
"We have to keep in mind that budget is a constitutional obligation. It will have to be presented," Mahajan was quoted saying.
There were reports doing the rounds that the budget may be deferred by a day after sections of the opposition, led by the Congress, demanded so. Ahamed, the IUML MP from Malappuram in Kerala, passed away at 2:15 am at the RML hospital in Delhi earlier today. He had fainted during President Pranab Mukherjee's address to the joint session of Parliament and was admitted to the hospital.
Parliamentary sources had told The Indian Express that there was no rule prohibiting the House from functioning due to the death of a sitting MP. It is only a convention, sources said.
