Thanks for making me to remember a great soul of India forgotten by Indians. I passed my young boy-days during mid-60s at Dapoli, Ratnagiri District, Maharashtra. Bharatratna Karve belonged to a small village called Murud near Dapoli, the place I visited many times on foot.
I could see some remains of untouchability even those days, Brahmins to move on a road higher than that built for others. I was surprized that Karve was outcast becuase of his reformation, not a single statue was there in his village. Karve used to literally beg in Pune with a Zola for donations in early 19th Century, a stanch follower for women education, got married a widow that was gainst the Shashras..
Maharshi Karve is a very unique outcome of Vedanta Philosophy like Swamy Vivekananda or Dayananda Sarswat who fought fo rgender equality, respect for women and educating them. This mind-power is the outcome what the Shasras really meant for him, one end and the other in the name of same Shasras he was rediculed by the so called custodian of Shasras. This dual policy is the main cause of India's backwardness.
Let us remember Bhratratna Maharshi Dhondopant Kesahv Karve, the light house for all generations to come.
Please do not forget to see Karve's Ahram (a small hut) in Hingane, Pune, that will inspire you like a fire!
