Re: [MTC Global] [Weekend Big Debate-I] Is the traditional research university doomed to extinction in a digital age?

No, university is never doomed to extinction in any age on her own. Please revisit::

  1. What is meant  by tradition?
  2. What is meant  by research?
  3. What is meant by university?
  4. What s meant by digital age?
  5. And now rethink on "traditional research university".

My take is:

  1. Tradition: Observance/practicing of  certain customs, procedures, rules, etc. over a long period of time so  that the mechanism in place  or facility  develops a rigid frame work for functioning.
  2. Research: Searching again and again so that finally an acceptable  solution is found  bringing out well-fare and well-being of man/society..
  3. University: A seat of learning and knowledge, a light house for humanity, that creates , assimilates and spreads knowledge for the ultimate evolution of human society.
  4. The term "age" , like, stone age,  industrial age, computer age, digital age, etc., is a man -made terminology,  specifying the most relevant dominant characteristic that  significantly influences almost all activities/functions of human society  over a very  long period of time. In fact, such a characteristic is but a man-made tool that fosters prosperity of society. Digital age means where "digits" are playing a major role, but an ancillary one.
  5. Digital age is in fact the off-spring of university, her research.  In fact, university being a seat of learning is expected  to abolish old un-healthy traditions and replace them by new ones. Thus, it is misleading to call university as traditional one though human society has adapted traditionally university as a seat of learning!
