Dear Sirs,
We the academia need some soul searching.
  • Political willpower is favorable for transformation, provided we can have consensus on proposals regarding what needs to be done and how to prioritize the issues, the short-term, medium-term and the long-term.  
  • Is regulatory framework the problem, UGC or AICTE or University?
  • Are we the part of problem or the solution?

But can we transform the Indian  education and other systems so to say in the desired way (global perspective) when India follows a (pseudo) democratic pattern of Governance where on hand we have bureaucracy, ministers, stalwarts and political parties and on the other the public at large, voting bank?

The primary reason for a fall in intake and closure of many management colleges & institutions is " MANAGEMENT IS NOT TREATED LIKE A PROFESSION, IT IS TAUGHT LIKE ONE MORE COURSE TO ENABLE THE STUDENT FIND A JOB, ANY JOB FOR THAT MATTER " 

Management education is not imparted the way it should be . It has less market value than a B tech, Pharma, other MA courses. 

Why did this happen.? 

Students need to understand the significance of an MBA/ PGDM, much before they take up the course. MBA is not a certificate - it is their life. As in an earlier mail, they should be aware of employment opportunities in NGO"s, Govt, SME"s. Not just an MNC or corporate or an Infosys or Wipro.  

Faculty have constraints as they are only employees of that institution. They cannot be assertive & forceful. Most of their ideas & thoughts remain in their minds & they keep doing their jobs in a routine way. That is affecting the student"s competitiveness & the institution"s cutting edge. It all has a snowballing effect.

Next, most Management colleges in India are only an additional dept in Engg colleges. Importance to MBA/ PGDM courses is not as much as Engg, Pharma, IT, other courses. A good no of colleges give certificates to students, without attending the classes. 

As an advocate of management & intensely involved in diffusion of management philosophy & knowledge, I find it difficult to be a mute witness to the decline in management  education. Sooner the faculty understand this the better. Owners should change their approach or else the future in tough.

Give importance to MBA/ PGDM & other management education & courses. That will ensure better future for the institutions.

  1. In all institutes including universities, neither process management nor performance management is done.
  2. Passionate teacher is rare species. Accountable and dutiful teachers are competent enough to face the challenges.
  3. Better to talk less about compensation for ours is a country where the Institutes of National Importance are hiring faculty on consolidated salary pm, say, AP Rs 40000 pm for one/two semesters.
  4. We know there is not a single Indian Institute in the first 100 World Top Universities during the last 7 decades  indicating that neither our faculty nor our education system is ready to take responsibility of carrying out the transition to new system to make it global. In fact, it is not seen to be necessary!

Dear all,

I would like to repeat saying that, there is no differentiation made between good, bad and average performer especially in this sector and hardly we find few passionate teachers.

So passion, plan and perseverance makes fabulous teachers. I guess 360 degree performance appraisal suits the need and even human resource accounting too. Survival of the fittest - I mean those who really work passionately and bring results are to be empowered and even package must be purely on the basis of performance.

There must be high level of healthy and progressive competition in teaching and it has to be strictly followed.

Selection criteria includes more of documents and degrees and why not excellence and passion with that?

Many business schools have come up and students are segregated much, they hire people with less salary to reduce cost and they don't bother what those teachers make? Are they making assets of nation or liabilities?

We must have a serious discussion on this and final decisions must be implemented soon to maintain the dignity of management education.
