[The G7, which primarily discusses common economic problems, was originally the G6 and briefly the G8.
In 1975, the finance ministers and central bank governors of France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States were called together by French President Giscard d'Estaing for informal discussions. These were the countries with the leading economies in the world (accounting for roughly half the world's wealth and gross domestic product) and they all confronted the effects of oil price shocks. The group was expanded to include Canada in 1976, making it the G7.
In 1994, with the Cold War over, President Clinton invited Russia, becoming briefly G8; but after the invasion of Crimea, the group suspended Russia in 2014.]
