CHENNAI: Students of the upcoming academic year across engineering and technical institutions will be the first batch to be introduced to the model curriculum of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). AICTE
AICTE regional officer R Balamurugan said there will be major differences between the new curriculum and the existing one. The theory part of the present curriculum will be reduced to emphasize on project-oriented activities. "The load will be reduced for students. The number of credits required for theory will come down. The number of topics may be reduced so they will be free to think on implementation. This curriculum will have training-oriented and design-oriented approaches. The aim is to improve the skills of students," he said.
The official said more focus will be given to real-time examples of the content that will engage students with laboratory assignments. More time will be provided for students to focus on hands-on experience, practical, design and development activities as well as to improve analytical abilities.
Several committees which were formed by the council have so far been working on the development of content for the new curriculum. At least 12 such committees have been formed on chemical and civil engineering; electrical, mechanical and textile engineering; maths, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, metallurgy and materials science; engineering and computer science. These committees include professors primarily from IITs across the country.
While the broad framework of the curriculum is being given by the AICTE, there will be an option of 20% flexibility when it comes to respective states. Depending on the regional requirement, respective states can modify 20% of the curriculum and localise content. "Some states may lay more emphasis on agriculture so the texts in that particular state may want to localise content to include agriculture-related topics," Sahasrabudhe had earlier told TOI.

While autonomous colleges will have more flexibility to implement the curriculum, AICTE officials said universities would have to follow the set curriculum which would be followed by its affiliated colleges. Balamurugran said Anna University was already aligning with the model by preponing exams so as to ensure that students had sufficient time in the summer months to attend industry internships.
The final announcement at the launch of the curriculum will be notified in the public domain.
