Industry visit is not a new norm. But how it is conducted is a matter of concern. Please look at the following real-life situations:

  1. When a Principal of a self-financed institute visited Scooter plant in Satara 2 decades ago, he simply amazed to say "How big the the factory is!"
  2. It is a matter of grave concern what is the % of faculty who regularly visit industry? How many are involved in solving industry project? My estimate says not even 1%!
  3. Industry visit is to be organized in a scientific way. The steps I have practiced are:
  • Identify the areas prone to industry visit from curriculum. Mind well industry visit is complimentary to teaching and training.
  • Set the objectives of industry visit.
  • Collect the data of each potential industry: products, turnover, workforce and plant acreage.
  • Identify the industry that suits to your purpose.
  • Have minimum two visits: one for overall understanding and second for specific area. Interact with the concerned industry personal.
  • Release industry visit letter.
  • On the day of visit, arrange one hour talk of industry personnel highlighting the features of industry. Actual visit may span 3-5 hours. 70% time on major thrust area and 30% general quick roundup.
  • Ask the students to write a note on industry visit.
  • Minimize the gap between objectives set for visit and its outcomes.
  • Thanks giving letter to industry and all top personnel involved. Request for donating some products/tools,charts, quality policy, etc.
  • Repeat the cycle for the next visit.
  • Faculty and staff be paid TA/DA as applicable. Provide free bus to students/staff. Lunch, etc., will be contributory.

I have come across some corporate who by nature of their business love to throw their doors open for Institute's but how far they contribute to the learning is a big question mark.

  • Mother Dairy.
  • Bisleri Plant
  • Other Dairy farming plants which have computerized machinery ( Gopal Dairy, Kwality Foods ).
  • Parle

These plants have been regulars in opening their doors for visits by students. However the visits should trigger the though process of youngsters giving them a sense of perception of numerous processes involved. I have seen that in the above corporate - most of the processes are all in computerized machines and one cannot see the process taking place and hence there is a documentary show in auditorium to showcase the process. Seeing is believing and learning so they feel that even documentary can do in place of real process.

Understandably the Bengaluru Electronic companies would be apprehensive about the secrecy of their data, their products and hence would not be comfortable to have students trooping and looking around as corporate world also is wary of secrecy of their new development going to competitors through any channels.

Unfortunately the Industry- Academic tie up is limited only to Summer Internship/Projects & the Placement hence the class room theories actual application in practice has limited scope till only when the students is on board and has liberty to start using his learning.

  2. There is no free lunch. The faculty and institute needs to ensure industry they can contribute to industry growth. Dear Esteemed MTCians,

Greetings from MTC Global.

Many colleges , including from Bangalore, are approaching us for taking their students for industrial visit. It is not at all a good indication that college located in Electronic City are struggling for industrial visit, which is an industry hub.

Somehow, companies are not encouraging / taking interest to come forward.

We have good number of MTCians from Corporate and we request that please come forward and help the students to make industrial visit.
