Debate: Should we adopt an east Asian approach to education?

The Independent, Friday 22 February 2013

Dear Prof. Dutta,

Thank you for sharing and pointing out this ongoing debate at "The Independent"!

China is only replaying what was achieved in the past by Britain - and right now being tutored by Advisers from The Old School who have phenomenal business interests and investments in China and its manufacturing industry (but not seeing sufficient returns on investment)!

The reasons for all this and the model they are trying to replay:  The first few minutes of Sugata Mitra's "Build a School in the Cloud" provides the reasons why China is aiming to produce such numbers of 'droids' - as this is what is required for the enabling China's planned global dominance and Empire of the Future'!

Sugata Mitra's TED Talk is at:

Can India, inspired by the clarity and vision of minds like Sugata Mitra,
Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayatri_Chakravorty_Spivak) and others, provide newer ways ahead and new models of societies for the future respecting the Triple Top Line?

Not only for those involved (the business leaders, educators and their teams), but also in the personal lives of people all around them and the lives they touch.

It's impossible to ignore the flipside to these reports of extraordinary educational achievement. Students in China working 5:30 am to 9:30 pm. Classrooms full of droid-like teenagers, able to churn out equations at impossible speed but unused to lateral thinking and - to Western eyes - dull to teach. Think about it from the point of view of a parent.
