Your intuition is correct. This is a civil war that dentists have concocted, and I am calling it Sleepgate. MDs have nothing to do with it. So sad.

My intuition says that none of this came from the sleep apnea physicians- we are not a threat to them, and more and more, they are wanting to recruit us to help screen for them. Most MD's do need to understand better the role of sleep appliances, no doubt!

Now I do believe that severe OSA is another animal and needs much more attention by the MD but personally we as dentists can treat snoring, mild and moderate cases IF we educate ourselves properly.

I disagree, most of us should be part of a team work approach in treating sleep apnea, just like we are part of a team treating all sorts of medical and dental problems. General dentists are the ultimate "screeners" of medicine, seeing people who think that they are doing okay, and helping to keep them healthy and functioning.

It is that we shouldn't purport to do this alone, just like we don't do cancer diagnosis and surgery alone, either. But that doesn't mean we don't screen and refer when needed.

Not totally sure.  It had to do something about complaints or concerns about advertising by dentist about treating sleep apnea.

We have to comment on the proposed rules.  I think it was meant to be some comments about what was happening and turned into rules, at least that is how I heard it from the political guys in my district society.

So, what would your contact(s) suggest we do to quell the overreaction? Is it Thornton or Denbar who started this mess?

I think that the back story is that there were/are some dentists in Texas who are pushing the Board very hard to relax the rules concerning the treatment of sleep apnea and they are lobbying hard to be allowed to do what they deem important, and there are some dentists who resent deeply that guys are taking one course and dipping their toes into that water. So, the board felt that they needed to do something, but I think they have overreacted on this.

Well, this is not a war as of yet.  As I understand what happened, the TSBDE when questioned about advertisement from dentists treating sleep apnea, asked the medical board what they thought and wrote it into a proposed rule.  The rule contains more stuff than just sleep apnea, it has to do with making occlusal changes as well.   I don't know, but I wouldn't think that there is one physician in a thousand that knows anything much about  occlusion. SO far, this is about the TSBDE rules.

Just another note, why must we always work with physicians, when most of them don't work with us for their patient's benefit?

You cannot win a war with physicians on sleep medicine.  You work with them…not against them.  Georgia is ruling soon that it is outside the scope of dental practice to diagnose and treat sleep apnea without a physician presence.

There is much more to this than just the sleep apnea.  Read the proposed rules.  They even talk about occlusal changes being in the realm of the MD"S.  The board asked the medical board what they thought and they got this back.  Seems like they (our board) didn't do a good job of it.  Everybody in Texas needs to comment on the proposed rules. It all boils down to a turf war.  We need to stand up now.

I think it is a little early to get too worried about this. They will review this ruling and then come out with a final ruling. I still think that we probably need to market snoring much more than apnea in any case- it has a so much more punch! The sleep physicians need good dentists to work with.
