The points raised by Professor Rao in respect of MCA prg are very valuable.
Let me share my role in MCA:
During 1985 GOI sanctioned grants to run MCA program. As I remember NIT Trichy
started MCA prg sometimes in 1985-86 and used to provide 60% computer manpower to
the nation during 1988-89.
Govt. College of Egg, Karad (Maharashtra) was also in receipt of MCA grants of Rs
5 lakhs in 1985 to develop a computer Lab, minimum network of 15 PCs and HCL
supplied the material. However in during 1989-90 MCA (Egg) wsa started under the
Shivaji University, Kolhapur. But before that University started MCA (Science
faculty) using the syllabus framed by te College sometimes in 1988-89.
Thus, there are two types of MCA prgs on under Engineering and another under
Science or Management faculty.
Besides these, there are host of other courses like BE(CSE/IT), B Tech (CSE/IT),
MCA (Egg/Sci), MCM. MSc (IT), MSc (CS), etc. What we need to investigate is:
1.
what is the degree of overlap of these prgs (extent of common courses).
2.
What is the orientation if a prg is run under different faculty?
3.
Can we reduce the number of titles of degrees?
4.
If common courses are brought at par in all prgs, exam. load will be reduced.
5.
Are IT or CSE related prgs really engineering prgs?
6.
What is the weighatges for major components of such prgs: like Core, Humanities,
Software, Hardware, applications?
7.
Are these students expected to handle only packages and PCs/mainframes?
8.
Why MCA is of three years? Make it two years. ICT tools are extensively available
and accessible.
9.
What will happen if we provide first two semesters for 10 courses and labs work
in-house, III Semester for Seminar and commencement of Project in-house and IV
Semester internship in an industry, completing the project?
Regards.
Yours,

, due to poor admissions, some of the reasons being:
1. As per UGC regulations, it is a 3 year PG program (perhaps the only PG prog
with 3 yrs duration).
When the prog was started in early nineties, it was ok, Now a lot of IT is covered
in Schools/intermediate/degree programs, most of which is repeated in first year of
MCA.2.Curriculum is focused only on IT applications ( hardware is not covered like
in  BTech-CSE) and is obsolete.
3. Employment : A BTech(CSE) or BTech(IT) (after studying for 4 yrs) gets a better
job than an MCA ( who studies for 6 years)
An MCA program, with 2 years duration, with re-engineered curriculum can get better
response from students and employers. Â Â

MCA program was the brain child of our former Prime Minster [L] Rajiv Gandhi. The
program was doing very well since then. During last few years many states have
stopped the program. Faculty are really worried in the existing MCA Departments.
Many affiliated colleges also have closed the MCA Department similar like Bio-
Technology [most of the engineering colleges have closed this department].
