Dear Sir, I think that on the whole it is not good idea to rename an Institution
because of the perception gap. For example one sees many modifications if the IIM
brand; take IIPM, for instance, a private B school that is building its own brand
after its most visible face. The perception in the mind of the student, and other
stakeholders is very different although there is only a change of a letter.
What qualities are conveyed by RGIIM as distinct from the IIMs needs to be
stressed. Changing the name from IIM Shillong to RGIIM would in fact create a
situation where it could get tagged as being another institution in the category
of CMJ University.

Google search. Culture of naming Universities, Airports, Educational institutions
with the name of national leaders has come down to IIM also, a professional
institution.

Dear Prof. Bholanath
My first reaction is that in case of Govt. / Govt. sponsored institutions, the
rationale is different from that of a marketing head in private company, which is
conveying the attributes which promise to satisfy needs and motivations of the
selected target group. Govt in power or politicians, wish to build the image of
their political party by perpetuating the memories of their iconic leaders.
Further, i do think it helps, as the name of iconic leader in Govt -of past era or
living, conveys its not one of private institutions set up with sole objective of
making money. One expects, along with image associations of IIMs, the name conveys
credentials about facilities and academic standards of superior order, as say in
case of JN university, IG Open university etc
As in case of other products / brands, ultimate performance is obviously
overwhelmingly more important than promise conveyed through brand name or its
communication
Just top of mind thoughts for whatever they are worth
