Re: [MTC Global] Curbing Academic Freedom [Your View]

Dear All

Greetings to everyone of this most prestigious platform. 

I have a few queries to everyone:

Is there anything wrong in assessing the models implemented by a Government?
Do we have some social responsibilities towards to the society or not?
Why the rulers are unwilling to respond in a decent manner to anything raised against them. 

In my opinion, the field of Management education, has a significant role to play in the socio-economic development of the nation apart from all political affinity. We have the caliber, strength and intellectual capabilities to suggest viable ideas, policies, rules and regulation after due discussion on a platform of this kind concerned with the functioning, operational, and encouragements that has to be  practiced by State and Central Government towards the sectors of all kinds. All these must be done solely by keeping in mind and focused towards the socio-economic development of the nation and for its citizens' well being. 

According to me we cannot just keep silence for everything that is being done by any Government. We all know, that we running of food-grain production to meet the growing demands, drop in cultivatable lands due to urbanization, water and power shortages and so on. What kind of policies have been framed by the rulers overcome these issues so for? Are the projects announced completed in time? What are underlying reasons for delaying the projects ultimately increase cost of project? From whose money they spend?

Glaringly it is all due to misappropriation of funds, corruption, commission and so on equally by at all levels in the Government. Hence, at this juncture we must raise our voice not against the Political Parties but against the Government to realize what they are doing and to make necessary changes. 

We may have affinity towards a political party but at the same time we must have the courage to oppose the wrongful ideologies and policies. Otherwise, it will pave way for corruption, abuse of powers, and not but the least it will ruin the nation. We can't just behave like a man who never care for anything.   

For instance a research was conducted by a scholar for obtaining his M. Phil Degree. Self Help Group received recognition by the previous Government that ruled Tamilnadu. After the completion of the Dissertation, a copy was sent to the Government for their perusal. It contains many critics regarding the implementation and execution at different levels of the state and the role played by the officials of the Government and political playboys. The dissertation also pointed out various hurdles faced the Self Help Groups and also other aspects such as corruption in the scheme. The scheme was accordingly based on the recommendation of the scholar after the careful examination the respective Ministries and Officers concerned. Immediately after two months a letter was received by the Scholar saying that some of the ideas expressed were taken into consideration for the implementation. Further, the concerned Minister invited the Scholar to his office and awarded Cash Prize of Rs. 25000/= along with a Certificate of Appreciation.   

Similarly, once the summarized report of Budget Analysis to the Ministries at the Central for reconsideration and of course some of them were also modified and implemented. 

Based on all the above, apart from Academics, we have to actively participate in the Governance by suggesting policies, plans, rules and regulations and so on for a better Nation Building. Students must also must come forward to know about unkown, must learn the unlearnt from teachers to become knowledgeable apart from academic inputs. Because recently in a news clipping, Management students are unaware of several things about economic, socio-political and cultural changes, that happens in the country. To certain extent majority of them are also not strong in the academics too. Therefore, it is our duty enlighten them with all these aspects and should not stay and remain like a mere spectators. 

Let us wish and pray "Growth of My Nation" is something great rather than my personal interest. Let us not offend or defend any Political Parties or Political Leaders, but of course we have the liberty of expressing the views about their Governance, Models, Policies, Rules and Regulations and so forth which are disclosed with deceitful manner and making us to believe it as true.

Is a Principal above economic planners, seasoned leaders, experienced bureaucrats & erudite acamedicians in recommending one model over another - Food security over a Corporatized Gujarat model.?, Yes, he is not from Mars or Neptune but he is a concerned citizen of India on Mother earth. .
The problem with our country is " Everyone speaks about Every other person & Everything".- without doing what they are supposed to do. And they take advantage of the silence of  intellectuals.

We decided sometime back that MTC G will confine all the discussions & knowledge sharing to "Management".

Following quote is relevant here . “Leaders don’t force people to follow, they invite them on a journey.” Charles S. Lauer .

The Principal of a prestigeous  college should be a marvellous role model in transmitting the most needed sobriety, balanced viewpoints, matured thinking & a diversity oriented approach - to the students to survive &
shine in a Globalized world..

responsibility and fair play.The stung BJP’s over-reaction to the
principal’s e-mail is flawed for several reasons. First of all, it
smacks of hypocrisy. Campuses across the country are thriving homes
to students wings of all political parties, even with the added
disadvantage of criminalized goons joining ranks of such student
wings. The BJP is no exception; infact its own units of student wing
ABVP has been accused of using intimidation and violence to coerce
students and even threaten faculty members on a number of occasions.
The politics on the campuses of key institutions has often played a
palpable role inelectioncampaigning and politicians have used
campuses for their rallies and speeches. A year ago, when Narendra
Modi descended on Delhi University’s Sri Ram College of Commerce to
sell his Gujarat model, did it not amount to bringing political
debate to the campus? Should the BJP memory be so short term as to
forget that to make Modi SRCC rally possible, not only did police
had to use water cannons and lathi-charge to push back students
democratically protesting against his visit but also the saffron
brigade’s student wings had to go on an over-drive of bullying
tactics to seek revenge and silence the dissenters. So is the BJP
trying to say that bringing political wings and encouraging a
culture of political hooliganism in campuses is fine but inculcating
healthy debates about politics is unacceptable?

Second, the BJP’s claim that the college principal’s letter amounts
to influencing minds of students is not only preposterous but also
ridiculous. The principal has not asked his students to vote or not
vote for any particular party but simply dissected the Gujarat
model, explaining the pitfalls of reliance on corporate sector for
economic growth and talked about the significance of emphasis on
social sector in India, through which he praises some existing
government schemes in social sector. He ends up by asking students
to think and take their decisions. There is no element of coercion.
Besides, such an argument that ‘an educational institution’s head
offering his critique of socio-political issues amounts to
influencing students’ is to undermine the intelligence of students
and their capacity to engage in a crucial debate. In a country where
BJP is fighting elections purely on excessive pumping of money to
inflate its image and that of its prime ministerial candidate
through well oiled propaganda machinery, advertisements,
advertorials and paid news, it makes a mockery of things to presume
that provoking a rational debate among adults of voting age is akin
to influencing. Thirdly, the communal colour that the BJP has been
trying to give to the principal’s e-mail smacks of a xenophobic
tendency and this must be discarded immediately before it has its
dangerous spill-over effect.

Fourthly, and more importantly,educational institutionscannot be
isolated from the politically surcharged atmosphere or from the
socio-economic ground realities of the country and the world.
Promoting a healthy culture of debating and discussing adds to the
health of these institutions which churn out not only pass outs
ready to pursue their respective careers but also leaders engaging
in political and social issues. It would do the right wing, which
believes less in looking back at the course of history and more in
re-writing it, to read the pages of history not very long ago and
see how variouseducational institutionsand the movements that sprung
within played a crucial role in the freedom struggle of the country,
also during the infamous period of Emergency that the BJP loves to
talk about to silence the Congress.

The BJP opposition to the letter and the entire furore over it stems
from its genetic DNA of intolerance. It is not about questioning the
methods employed by the Mumbai college’s academic, much less about
challenging his views; it is indeed about opposing the very idea of
dissenting views and democratic thoughts, the ability and legitimacy
of anyone to offer a critique that does not augur well with its own
unprincipled ideology. Besides, it also challenges the very
rationale of thinking.What is your take on the subject?Educate,
