learning. Towards this end, the institution has to provide learning
inputs actively, foster a learning environment and periodically
measure the extent of learning achieved. It has to set levels of
attainment of academic achievement and develop strategies whereby all
those who seek to study attain that level when they leave the
institution.
Studies on learning have shown that learning alters behavior
patterns. So, this changed behavior must be manifest in the student.
Clearly such a change of behavior must enable the student to adapt to
the ways of the larger world and become a useful member of the
society. An institution that produces disillusioned, disgruntled and
cynical students has clearly deprived the students the fruits of real
education.
Normally, it is assumed that education enables a student to learn to
think for himself by recalling relevant principles, reasoning
correctly, marshalling facts and thinking carefully before speaking
and doing things. In doing so he should be able to use the tools and
techniques to achieve clarity and efficiency.
This is the ideal. But it must be expected that only a few would
measure up to this ideal. I believe that the closer a student reaches
to this ideal, the better is the student in attaining learning.
