RE: [MTC Global] [Big Debate] Should the MBA Students Take an Oath?

A well designed orientation program for the new students  spread over few days conducted by old students and faculty jointly can do the trick.

People do not follow or remember oath, so it is not necessary. On the similar logic,  many things may not be necessary as people do not follow those. We need to make an honest effort to create awareness and encourage students towards certain directions to make them binding and responsible.

Character building is a domain which is little different than the oath. The question comes in my mind "Is personal values / character and professional ethics are interdependent ? or both can exist independent of each other".

HBS has a very good professional ethics code for MBA graduates.

Kindest Regards,

Why just  the MBAs? Do the MBAs rule the world? What about MBA professors or students in other disciplines ? I think the whole point of introducing oath is meaningless when daily prayers in most Indian families does not lead to building a strong character. Doctors have to take the oath because they are dealing with life and death issues. The worst the MBAs could do is manipulate profits and losses, nothing more.

No oath or any other short term approaches towards character building will ever work with human beings. Its a long term process involving- gaining an insight, understanding it, experiencing it and advocating it. thus it needs to be inculcated from beginning i.e. childhood and every one who come in contact to that child has some sort of responsibility to deliver his/her duties towards character building of that child.

As the admission season is on and soon the next academic year will start, do you believe that MBA Students need to take an oath on the very first day when they are in the campus?

Many colleges have 'Professional Ethics ' "Codes of Conduct' document which rarely read and locked in the cupboard for inspection.

Do you too agree that an Oath will set the platform right on the very first day???

How many colleges are seriously doing it?

Request esteemed MTCians' views.
