CAMEROON: A Lion Deeply asleep

Cameroon is described by most persons as a huge lion deeply asleep. For more than thirty years, Cameroon has not witnessed any significant changes needed to provoke a takeoff of the economy. The productive apparatus of the state cannot readily respond to the increasing needs of the population. The numerous resources of the state – human and material are either lying idle, underutilized, or poorly managed.

Cameroon has been and continues to be one of the most qualified candidates in Africa for economic emergence. It has within it all the momentum needed for that purpose, and can join the wagon of emerging nations in about ten years from today if the minimum requirements are made. What has been lacking, and is still lacking is a resolute vision and actions focused in that direction.

The Cameroon economy is not yet independent, and our leaders appear to be comfortable in that situation. The colonial masters are still present in various forms, and continue to amass most of our resources for their economies. They still have a significant influence over the ways our state resources are oriented and exploited and the real worry today is that it is not known when the lion shall wake up.
