Re: [MTC Global] [HQ] MTC Global condoles demise of Verghese Kurien

Dear esteemed  MTCians,

An article by Dr.Goving Welling , on Verghese Kurien. An interesting read , which i thought I should share with all MTCians:

Your milkman just died?

In one of the quizzes my team was asked a question which country is the largest producer of milk in the world and I happened to say India - my quiz partner looked at me with shock in his eyes - he wanted to say Belgium, I had met Dr. Verghese Kurien; he had not! - I squeezed his hand because it was a no brainer - and we won!

Well I will drink two glasses of milk today! I will salute the man who had conviction - who called a spade a spade - had various run-ins with politicians and he believed in his dream and he was successful. AMUL - many farmers and women will across Gujarat, and millions across India should be grateful to him. People in Africa too have expressed deep grief on his passing away.

Kaira Dairy - Amul Dairy- GCMMF - National Dairy Development Board - IRMA - IBMC - all world class institutions, it was a privilege, breathing the same air he breathed - he was the stuff of legends in the Cooperative sector and he will be sorely missed.
The story about him going house to house at first to get milk drops and a while later, this drop of milk became a flood - Operation Flood, this morning as Dr. Kurien died, 883 million people had their milk delivered to their homes across India, I am sure it was dropped at your doorstep too!

Another thing people in AMUL used to set their watches to his time of coming and leaving the office! Another story you may not know is that India is the only country in the world that produces milk power from water buffalo milk!

Dr Kurien - felt that he was a trustee not a marketer because there is something very special about milk, milk is not a white good or a brown good. It is not something people save their entire lives in order to buy – like a car, or a house. Milk is not a status symbol; rather it is the symbol of nutrition. Milk is a nearly complete food, providing protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients so essential to maintaining good health. Its value is only realized when it is missing.

All this coming from a man who hated milk is ironic!

Well - Dr. Verghese Kurien all milk will now be marked BK and AK (Before Kurien and After Kurien)
