"The MTC-Future Brands Case Studies":
MTC Global Minimum Standards for a PhD, perhaps? A minimum of six case studies completed to a quality better than what the best IIM's can produce and to match world class standards. Maybe find a way to develop a collaborative project with Future Brands Ltd to develop jointly "The MTC-Future Brands Case Studies" - and be assured there will be much in these case studies for Harvard Business School to learn from.
... "Free your mind. Welcome to a brave new world of brands ... and case studies & PhD's".
Simple principles that shaped and continues to guide Google:
- "Knowledge is always good, and certainly always better than ignorance"
- "Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful"
- "Don't be evil".
Google - Advertising accounts for virtually all of Google's revenue, which totaled nearly $23 billion through the first half of this year.
Both Larry Page and Sergey Brin were PhD students - a recent article provides images of the scale of Google's operations!
"Inside the Internet: Google allows first ever look at the eight vast data centres that power the online world"

Compare all of this with ... "UGC minimum standards and procedures for awards for MPhil/ Degree (notified in the Gazette of India 11 to 17 July 2009)
http://www.ugc.ac.in/oldpdf/regulations/mphilphdclarification.pdf
-16. PhD. candidates shall publish one research paper in a refereed journal before the submission of the thesis/ monograph for adjudication, and produce evidence for the same in the form of a acceptance letter or the reprint.
Are these prescriptions for progress or disaster? In such prescriptions and guidance:
- the 'map' is easily mistaken for the 'territory' - and the PhD process then becomes a case of 'ticking boxes' and meeting the (bare) minimum requirement.
- the guidelines provides little incentive for the much needed incremental progress in nurturing and growing a research culture and the development of novel research lead teaching, ideally even at undergraduate levels.
- And finally, in these and related pathologies the PhD becomes a way for advancing ones livelihood and not one of advancing knowledge
- and thus begins the downward spiral and the destructive power of the 'bare minimum'
... and the all important question remains ... will this improve the quality of the document, the process, the experience and training and the product / mind?
Raising institutional standards & raising aspirations: The leaders are already rethinking! Like Google's ""Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful"" there are hundreds of thousands of intellectually challenging issues locally in each district of India with a potential to shape the New World. Santosh Desai, MD and CEO, Future Brands (http://www.futurebrands.co.in/), and an IIM-A alumnus presents the future needs in the recent article in Business Today:
From Shamni Pande's article "Back To Class: IIM-A is once again India's best business school"
http://businesstoday.intoday.in/story/best-business-school-iim-ahmedabad/1/188762.html
"B-school education of the kind exemplified by IIM-A is rooted in the assumptions of an earlier era," says Santosh Desai, MD and CEO, Future Brands, and an IIM-A alumnus. "The traditional MBA programme was created for a time when managers were the most vital part of large, stable businesses operating in limited geographies." Desai, considered a branding and marketing expert, says that the focus today has shifted from management to creation, where volatility is the norm and culture is a key determinant of success or failure.
"The operations research based approach followed by IIM-A needs to give way to a more complete one that incorporates areas like behavioural economics, anthropology and design thinking." The lack of dynamism, Desai believes, will hinder the institute from fostering entrepreneurs and leaders capable of creating businesses around ideas rather than around historical infrastructural advantages, as has been the case with traditional businesses.
What Vishwamangal Gou Gram Yathra did for desi-cows (eng.gougram.org/) Future Brand's Bharath Darshan (http://www.futurebrands.co.in/index.php) is doing for small businesses across the country. This from: http://www.futurebrands.co.in/index.php
Bharat Darshan: A rediscovery of India 2011
India is transforming in big ways and small. This year, our teams travel across India to experience, first hand, how change is changing who we are. Go to our Facebook page for updates as we travel to Bhopal, Vidisha, Sehore, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Anand, Mandavi, Surendernangar, Amravati, Karjan, Trichy, Salem, Jaunpur, Darbhanga, Siliguri and more.
In such challenges and possibilities in a rapidly growing nation, and certainly not in UGC notices and prescriptions, is the material that can shape future PhD's - world class challenges and world class PhD's!
