A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine finds that men in their 30s with inflamed gums from severe periodontal disease are three times more likely to also experience erection problems.

The study by a group of Turkish researchers found that more than 50% of a group of men with erectile dysfunction had inflamed gums while inflammation was found in less than 25% of the control group without erectile dysfunction, according to a press release.

The researchers said the findings support the connection between periodontal disease and other health problems such as heart disease. They also think doctors treating men with erectile dysfunction should look into the patients' periodontal health as a part of the diagnosis, according to the release.
