One of the more important factors: the stability of the arm and its wall mount. How fast does it damp motions, and how soon is the tech hitting the button before motion stops.

It is a fact that the type of xray head, the health of the components (power supply, tube, etc.) all factor into image quality. So, if anyone is concerned about improving diagnostic quality of the images, then all xray sources are not equal.

After using the Nomad for a couple of years, it opens up some new thinking, but it is hard to know if it make fiscal sense. But if you want a different image, one that would be impossible or difficult with a fixed head, well, you just do it, quick and easy. No biggie. The problem is that all of these things just open up new ways of thinking, and can challenge the business models we have so carefully crafted!

Yea a used one is around $2k. It's like a used car. If the head works (which is easier to find companies that rebuild them!), it's either spend $700 on a control board, $2k for a use refurbished one, or $5k on a new one. All things considered, I think my decision to buy just the control is a sound one..for now!
We'll see after the month warranty runs out!

Ray,
Another option is to buy a used unit that came in on a repo or lease.  Several companies sell them and they have been tested with limited warranties.

An interesting thing came up yesterday when we were trying to find a new control box / timer board for my old SS White Marksman I.

It took several calls to many distributors all over the U.S. to finally find one.

During my search, I had to secure a dental supply company guy repair man who I trust. One guy I asked a pretty interesting question about.

My question was this..

Would my practice be worth the extra several thousand dollars I'd be putting into a brand new xray source versus getting all the ones there, all in working order?

He nicely said to me, 'Ray, your practice would be worth $X..and a new xray in one room would very likely NOT make it worth $X + the cost of a new xray.

Makes sense. SO two of the machines in my Kittanning office are over 30 years old, and so they may break again, but his statement and answer made alot of sense. SO instead of spending $5k on a hand held Nomad or equivalent, I spend $700 on a new control board. An xray source is an xray source. PERIOD. A new one would have the parameters set a bit lower with the digital sensors available, but it's ROI.
