Re: [MTC Global] Universities make "millionaires"

Very relevant question.

As per the details published in Daily Mail of UK, most of them are self-made , though percentages vary from university to university.
I am giving below an extract in this regard from the news item.

"Despite the reputation of Oxford and Cambridge as bastions of the aristocratic elite, relatively few of their multi-millionaires inherited their wealth. More than two thirds of Oxbridge alumni worth more than £20 billion made their fortunes through their own efforts with no help from their families. At the University of Edinburgh, by contrast, fewer than half made their millions thanks to an entrepreneurial spirit, with the majority relying on an inheritance to build their own fortune. The University of Birmingham is where the most self-made millionaires can be found - 84 per cent of its super-rich graduates became wealthy on their own."

In a  way, it may be a reflection of the quality of the students intake and value add created by the University, in moulding students and their lives, beyond
providing knowledge inputs..

That Mumbai University has produced India's largest number of ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals — 372 alumni, worth $37 billion — could be ascribed to geography given its location in the financial capital, and Delhi's 229 super-rich alumni to serendipity given its proximity to power. However, the correlation between premier universities and wealth may not be coincidental going by data collected by a wealth research firm.

The first 15 places on a " graduate rich list" go to the best US varsities, led by Harvard, UPenn and Stanford, whose 5,640 richest alumni are collectively worth a shade over $1 trillion. Oxford tops the British brigade on the international list at 16th place with 401 alumni worth $51 billion with Cambridge following in 19th position — behind Mumbai University's 18th — with 361 UHNW individuals worth $93 billion, but more billionaires.

Would-be UHNW Indians should note that Birmingham University — at 10th place in the British list with 68 HNIs — has the highest percentage of self-made millionaires: 84% compared to Mumbai University's 44%. Moreover, Australian universities Sydney, New South Wales, Melbourne and Monash have also produced a creditable 247, 176, 123 and 115 super-rich alumni, respectively. A cost-benefit analysis before choosing universities is clearly in order.
