Sleep labs are going to lose their ability to generate decent incomes for physicians in the very near future as more and more insurance companies in Georgia are demanding ambulatory sleep studies to determine the degree of apnea they are dealing with. Those can be done for about 270 dollars according to a sleep physician here. I charge 100 dollars less than that but that does not include the docs reading the study. Their 270 does not include reading the study. Insurance is going to make this desirable because they are going to pay 6-700 bucks for ambulatory probably, moving docs away from labs. Complex, severe apnea, and children will be done in centers. Children here must be done in hospital labs.

As I said in my original post about the meeting a couple of weeks ago, there was a sleep physician present that spoke to our dental board. He missed a few facts but not severely and I was generally in agreement with him. He sounded like someone I'd like to work with. But during his presentation to the board he did mention several times the issue of economics for him and his sleep lab...

There is much more to this than just the sleep apnea. Read the proposed rules. They even talk about occlusal changes being in the realm of the MD”S. The board asked the medical board what they thought and they got this back. Seems like they (our board) didn’t do a good job of it. Everybody in Texas needs to comment on the proposed rules. It all boils down to a turf war. We need to stand up now.

I think it is a little early to get too worried about this. They will review this ruling and then come out with a final ruling. I still think that we probably need to market snoring much more than apnea in any case- it has a so much more punch! The sleep physicians need good dentists to work with.
