Some say to drop it, but every day my mangled left hand hurts...as to the
driver, a lawyer told me because of police support he would likely get
nothing...
............
June 6 is the anniversary of D-Day. I became very active in trying to get
the Government to provide proper respect for the War Memorial and the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier. I had to embarrass them into action; but , it now
has summer care and protection.
One June 6, 2008 I had a day off work and decided to cycle to the Tomb to
speak with people and to hand out D-day commemorative papers.
I was cycling along a busy road when a car forced me into the curb. I
caught up and tapped on his roof and "Politely" gave him what for. He
deliberately veered into me and accelerated and took off.
I was left with a broken leg and a mangled left hand with bones protruding.
My helmet may have saved my life...as it fractured but I had no head pain
As I lay in shock the attending officer began to berate me for "Touching
his car" The accident was 5 minutes from the police station. He did turn
himself in 45 minutes later and they let him go before I had even issued a
report.
Thus began a frustrating 6 months . The case was closed after I was sworn
at by the attending officer, the witness on the other hand was not called
for 3 weeks. I was called a racist as an officer told me where he came from
may have made him scared when I touched his car, I remarked that our lads
are coming back from Afghanistan with a maple leaf on their coffins. The
driver was from Columbia and I can feel for his fear...but..this is Canada.
I replied to the racist epithet by speaking to the Officer in Spanish ( I
can speak it) then I added if he did not understand he must be a racist
So sworn at, threatened with a mischief call as I lay in shock, called a
racist. I was also told I had dented in his car roof ( Impossible with a
bare hand, I tried it on other cars in my driveway ) I have several police
friends with whom I served in Cyprus and I know what professionalism is
about, in their difficult work. In this case the Ottawa police fell far
short of what I, as a retired military officer and defender of the Memorial,
would expect.
If you agree let the city of Ottawa know you are not impressed... I have
been told to drop it; but every day I look at my twisted left hand, and
sometimes feel it when I work. I was called on the carpet a few times as a
young soldier and it made me a better officer. This was form a circle and
forget it...sad comment indeed
