I was the same way, although I do have some fantastic sleep guys in my area.
 
if a pt simply wants NOTHING out of pocket, then they can keep walking.  Normally we are simply collecting the deductible, which they are ALL too familiar with and don't reject/react.

By FAR, the best way is to have all of this before the patient ever sits in your chair. We actually have a huddle every morning just to discuss sleep patients. Bailey lets the assistants know what to collect from the patient that day and how to word the conversation (among other things). We always use the 3rd party to gather info for us - should happen within 24 hours.

Yes, we do a benefits check, and find out their deductible left over, what their copay is in an out of network, whether a Gap can be requested and how to request it. Over the years, we have collected UCRs for the various employers in our area, and use 5th grade math to determine what their minimum will be (if the Gap is accepted) and what their maximum would be (if the Gap is not accepted), but from prior history, we have a good idea of whether or not we will get the Gap, so we have a very goo idea of what their out-of-pocket will be.

As usual you have great insight.

I am looking at this as an add on to build that part of my practice. There is definitely room in my market for this service. The larger point is sleep marketing going to give me a great return on investment longterm?  I think radio is the way to go for this.

Interestingly, from previous sleep apnea radio marketing,  one woman who answered a sleep ad became a regular dental patient who is now in the middle of a 15k treatment plan, before the sleep appliance.

Ray, my marketing guy has an unusual approach to marketing, but it fits me and my situation. In a nutshell, our first five or six months of this year were radio messages that featured different dental topics, but the whole approach was this: To establish me as a dentist that the listener could trust- creation of that "Trusted Professional" status, even before we started trying to sell sleep, or short term ortho, or facelift dentures, or smile design.

If you look around at your average day, Stan, you will find that you have a lot of people with long term dentistry, given to them as part of a long term relationship. People who believe you, who trust and respect you and what you do and I will submit that your marketing has to center around that, to adding to your valuable patient family, instead of selling different services piecemeal. Those patients are the ones who don't question fees, who say hello to you in the grocery store, who introduce you to their friends if you run into them at a restaurant.

So, Ray's approach was to make that the primary thrust, and then to build additional services from that, once they had tiptoed into your domain and kicked the tires a bit. Now with sleep, especially with Medicare commoditizing the whole process, I am not sure this idea works as well, but I am not signed up for medicare anyway.

How are you approaching the sleep aspect of your practice in any case, Stan? Is it a vital cog, an add on, or just what? What percentage of your revenue are you planning to get from sleep?
