Modern business is widening the gap between haves and have nots. While industry focuses on profit, B-schools focus on employing students which means creating more and more employees. There is little or no focus on creating employers. Students are scared of independent ventures. Parental pressure, societal norms do not allow students to experiment with business setups.
The institute where I teach produces about 300 students every year, only 1or 2 of them venture out for some kind of entrepreneurial activities. This has to change. Unless until there is strategic change in the focus on creating entrepreneurs and employers, this situation would remain as it is.
Taking a cue from BOP marketing, what exactly industry is doing to enhance the affordability of BOP mass. Whatever little they spend on so called CSR activities are actually cases of charity and donations. We have very few companies in this country who are into hard core CSR stuff. May be with the new companies bill making CSR spend mandatory there could be some tangible results.
Moreover Management institutes can do a lot by improving the employability of semi skilled/un skilled youth segment.
In short I would suggest three things.
1.Thrust on creating entrepreneurial mind sets and entrepreneurs at B-school
2.Sensitising the future managers about CSR activities.
3.Knowledge sharing and training by management fraternity for needy sections of the society.

It's said that a business is not expected to prosper in a society that doesn't. Hence poverty reduction or eradication must be on the top of management.
And for this to happen what is required is not mere CSR but individual social responsibility. Look at the case of BabarAli the youngest headmaster (from Murshidabad in West bengal) who started sharing (teaching to be precise) his knowledge with his poor friends who couldn't make it to the school.
Similarly Sharatbabu of IIM (A) chose to provide gainful employment by becoming an entrepreneur rather than seeking jobs. So let's encourage our students to become entrepreneurs and most importantly social entrepreneurs. Because today the emphasis is on people, profit and planet.
Apart from encouraging and facilitating social entrepreneurship (where in our Senior MTCIANS can chipin by mentoring etc as is being done already in some places) let's inculcate and imbibe the qualities of caring, , concern for the fellow human beings while controlling their ego/greed etc.
As Father of Nation rightly said there is enough to meet the needs of people but not enough to satisfy the greed.
Let's hope that better sense will prevail and sharing /caring starts on a massive scale. Lastly let me conclude by saying that if we give a fish he will eat for the day but if teach him to fish he will eat for the life. So let's pull our strengths in facilitating the youngsters to be the social entrepreneurs.

As we are aware that there are eight millennium developmental goals and first one is eradicate poverty. Is it possible to address the poverty issue through management education ? Few steps are already taken like various community services works, collaboration with NGOs etc. But not many. Is it possible to include the same in the curriculum ?
Request reflection on the subject. It would really helpful to the members.
