Dear Subhangi,
There could be hundreds of external factors that impact performance and productivity of an employee.
Also while some factors may impact performance, some may impact productivity. Performance and productivity have different connotations. The more precise we are in defining these terms, the more robust would be our research.
Internal and External: Internal/External to who --the employee or work? For an employee internal factors could be emotional, health or relevant personal factors. If ‘internal’ is with regards to work then it could be workplace, tools used, work timings, etc, etc.
Same with external. Please set the context for external. Your factors will then fall in place.
It is important that the context is set properly for any succinct advise.
Let me throw some random external factors –
Employee’s mother is ill.
Employee’s child is crying with stomach pain.
Employee is mentally upset because his neighbour screamed at him.
Employee is upset with politicians dividing the country.
Employee is unhappy with the gloominess in weather.
Employee is jealous of his friend who has lesser work hours.
Employee is stuck in traffic jam.
Employee did not carry umbrella and is fully drenched by the time he reaches office.
Employee’s female colleague gave him a compliment.
The same examples could be construed as internal if the definition is changed a bit.
There could be hundreds of factors. It is important that you first define what internal and external mean. Also define productivity and performance. Performance need not be productive, productivity though may lead to good performance. So you need to define your variables first. Only then can one be able to suggest more appropriately.

Praveen
