Re: [MTC Global] Management Story

Dear Balaji
Best performers can b rewarded so that they'll repeat or excel. But what's wrong in encouraging and giving constructive suggestions to bad performer to improve his performance. By the by no one remains the best all the time. I think HR professionals will agree.
Best regards

Hello friends,

I have been watching the Indian Badminton League (glad that I got a respite from watching cricket 24/7) where along with my family I too have started to root for P V Sindhu, Saina and other Indian players. We all vociferously support a winner and we want them to win come what may and continue to win forever. I am sure the Tendulkars, Beckhams, Vishwanthan Anands, Tiger Woods, Federer  of the world carry the same onus on them every time they play an important match. We don't remember the people who comes second, but only who comes first. We all bet on the winning horse, isn't it? Why blame a manager if he finds one of his employees being outstanding compared to another; it is part of life and companies are running and will run like this only. Best performers are paid well, promoted, benefits et al. Why not? The best or the fastest survives even in the jungle.

Just an argumentative perspective.

Warm Regards,
Balaji Rao

I agree with Dr.Arcot and Dr.John in as much as what the Donkey story reveals the right perspective of Management ( Manage / Men / (T)   Tactfully ). As long as the boss or the Leader is able to understand the efficiency and the capacity of his subordinates, work will flow smoothly. Any discrimination or over emphasis on any individual will result in chaos and disgruntlement. Even normal work will get halted if such approach is there.

Boss or a leader must be pragmatic in his approach and must be realistic in his expectations.
A boy has scored 90% in 4 subjects out of 5. In the fifth subject he has scored only 50%. His parents instead of appreciating that boy for having scored 90% in 4 subjects, they start reprimanding him for having scored 50 % in one subject. Expectation must be realistic.

Try to motivate your subordinates and give them the scope of improvement. I remember a saying "Suicide is a permanent solution for  a temporary problem." Likewise punishing the weak worker and rewarding a seemingly good worker will yield same  negative results as we have seen in the Donkey episode. As told by Dr.Jagan Mohan Reddy, what is required is Involvement and commitment from both the Employer and the Employed on the execution of jobs.

I agree with the views expressed by Dr Prasad garu.
Today, in a highly competitive environment which is characterized by Ganesh Idol made in China  sold in Pune kind of thing, it is the human resource which provides the cutting edge.
Hence we can't fritter away such a precious resource and all the required effort must be putin to get outstanding results.
My mantra for getting the whole hearted cooperation from the people is Involve, Inform and Inspire so that they perspire.
Moreover today operational efficiency being the buzzword it is the strategy (being different) which should make the things happen.  Needless to say people provide the required difference (outstanding service at SWSL or Customer Centric Culture at Zappos).

Dear Professors
It was a very good story. Donkey A is a performance driver and owner is an Idiot. Owner should have thought of doing Training and Development for Donkey B rather than  harassing it. In this competitive world it is very important how much close you keep your cards. It is very easy to hire and fire. For better branding we need people and committed people for the organization.Mere sending people out because world is so big may not help. This is the situation for many of my Senior IT friends. Juniors are given better package and better deal as well better hike in the salary. This lead to lot of confusions in the Minds of Seniors.

Prof. Varatharaj,
This is similar to the stories in Corporate world.
It is otherwise called as PERFORMANCE PUNISHMENT. More and more work you do, your boss tends to give more and more work, thus make you weak. The difference is that your boss looks at you as a competitor, wher as the owner of the donkeys looks at you as a donkey.

Washerman's Donkey: Management moral story

Once upon a time a Washerman was bringing up two donkeys. Let us say Donkey-A and Donkey-B.

Donkey-A felt it was very energetic and could do better than the other. It always tried to pull the washerman's attraction over it by taking more load and walking fast in front of him.

Innocent Donkey-B is normal, so it will walk normal, irrespective of the washerman's presence.

After a period of time, Washerman started pressurizing Donkey-B to be like Donkey-A. But Donkey-B unable to walk fast, got continuous punishment from washerman. It was crying and told personally to Donkey-A "Dear friend, only we two are here, why to compete with each other. We can carry equal load at normal speed." That made Donkey-A all the more energetic and next day it told to washerman that it can carry more load and even it can run fast too. Obviously happier washerman looked at Donkey-B, his BP raised and he started kicking Donkey-B.

Next day with smile, Donkey-A carried more load and started running fast. But it was breathtaking for Donkey-B and it couldn't act that way. But the washerman was frustrated, so he harassed Donkey-B terribly, and finally it fell down hopelessly. Then Donkey-A felt itself as a supremo and happily started carrying more load with great speed. But now the load of the Donkey-B is also being carried by Donkey-A., and still it has to run fast.

For some period it did, finally due to fatigue it got tired and started feeling the pain. But washerman expected more from Donkey-A. It also tried best, but couldn't cope up with his owners demand. The Washerman got angry with Donkey-A also and started harassing to take more load. Donkey-A was crying for long time and then tried its best. But it couldn't meet the owner's satisfaction.

Finally the day came when due to frustration the washerman killed Donkey-A and went for searching some other donkeys. Its an endless story.

The moral of the story in Corporate life is:
"Think all colleague are same and that everyone is capable. Always share the Load equally. Don't ever act smart in front of your Boss and never try for getting over-credit. Don't feel happy when ur colleague is under pressure." And most importantly, Never Work Hard, Work Cleverly. "Success is a journey not a destination!"
