@Pa Fru et Manu: Re: Inside Innoson Motor Manufacturing Plant Nnewi Nigeria - World's First Black-Owned Car Manufacturer

Hi Pa Fru,
on the shape of the car being similar to a Hyundi, I am not an expert in patenting of shapes but Innoson has many patent agreements with various manufacturers hence if the shape is patented by Hyundi, an agreement might be in place instead of redesigning shapes from scratch. I am not sure.

On whether the cars are manufactured or they are doing a "Manu computer type" assembly, all I can say is Innoson has one of the biggest plastic factories in Africa and manufactures various kinds of plastic parts from bumper, car seats, batteries etc.

On the tyres, Innoson now has a tyre factory that he decided to build after Dunlop closed shop in Nigeria. He is into bicyle, car and various tyre manufacture with the abundant rubber/petrochemicals raw material in Nigeria.

On metal work, Innosum inports flat steel from Czech Republique and builds all the bodywork in Nigeria. The tubular steel parts are also done in Nigeria. Various parts not made by Innoson are sourced from the numerous and licenced part manufacturers in Nnewi.

As a summary, to give you a holistic picture of the situation, when President Jonathan came to inaugurate the Innoson factory, he told the President infront of the whole world that he is not a car assembler but a manufacturer. That he manufactures almost all the rubber parts and most of the metal parts and the ones he does not manufacturer he sources them from Nnewi manufacturers who have specialised in those parts.

He said the main think that he imports is the Engine block and one or two parts. He told the president that "Mr President, I am not asking much. All I ask is that you give me electric(he is running on generators most of the time and very costly) and Ajakouta (the moribund steel factory about to be resuscitated) and within 2 years I will manufacture the engine in Nigeria. I have all the agreements to Manufacture the engines in place and I am waiting for you".

Regards

Tumasang

Manu!
Come on! Even for CUE's sense of the debauched, he doesn't believe there's a champagne plant in Cameroon! Of all things to "assemble", a champagne distillery! I don't believe it and I'm sure you mean a chocolate factory or a rubber lumping factory or a palm oil milling factory. I can even deal with a Guinness or Star Beer factory, but a bubbly distilling one? For who, us? So, Manu please cross-check and confirm to us that you were mistaken on this champagne factory thing. Waiting .......

Unlike the typical assembly lines used in Europe, America and Japan,  "IVM" vehicles seem to be hand crafted. I hope they are not priced out of the reach of the average Nigerian. Ohh!! before I forget, does anyone know how the "Champagne" manufacturing plant in Cameroon is doing!!!

Mr. Okafor:
The vehicle in the picture above looks very much like a standard Hyundai/KIA  SUV. Nonetheless, it's a great step forward for Nigeria!!!

Do they have plants in Nigeria that manufacture the main engine, transmission,  headlights, car seats, tires, wheels, brakes, etc etc..
The reason I'm asking is because, a car is very much like a computer. I take pleasure in putting together my own desktop computers. I order the the Hard disk drive from Seagate, the motherboard and processor from Intel, the compact disk drive (CDD) from sony, wireless adapter from netgear, the case and power supply from any of the several companies that sell 'barebone units" online.  Once all the necessary components are in place, it takes me an average of one hour to get the computer up and running. Does that mean I manufacture computers? Nope!!!! I just build my own computers...it's a generic type as opposed to an OEM computer. Are these vehicles assembled in Nigeria or are they actually manufactured in Nigeria?
Manu

Martin

Federal Government of Nigeria banning the importation of used cars from abroad make much sense - local industry must be protected. Peugot Nigeria, ANAMCO, and now Innoson, all need government protectionist law in their favor.

INNOSON THE FIRST MADE IN NIGERIA CARS,BUSES ,TRUCKS

Now we molding vehicles, its all a start and seriously Igbos are doing a great job at trying to make our own from every invention there in. We should learn to accept our and try to develop em, not label them fake or substandard. Every one in the manufacturing business started from somewhere. Now lets meet the man behind this break through: He is the youngest among six children, Chief (Dr) Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma (OFR), was born into the family of Mr & Mrs Chukwuma Mojekwu of Uru-Umudim, Nnewi, in Anambra State, without the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. But, what he lacked in affluent parental background, he made up for with intelligence, hard-work, discipline and business acumen – qualities that have continued to interplay remarkably in his many ventures. In February 2007, Chukwuma embarked on what some analysts perceived then as a mission impossible, when it incorporated INNOSON Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited (IVM), to produce sundry commercial automobiles, utility vehicles and passenger cars, in collaboration with a consortium of Chinese auto manufacturers. With the public display of some of the vehicles at the 2nd Nnewi International Auto Trade Fair held at the Beverly Hills Hotels (Gabros Sports Complex) in the last quarter of 2009, IVM did not only silence the critics, but made a bold statement about its readiness to achieve the avowed mission of being the first (indigenous) auto maker to produce truly Nigerian vehicles that are affordable and reliable. IVM is today a success story which has attracted effusive commendations and awards from various quarters, including the nation's seat of power. While opening the plant on October 15, 2010, President Goodluck Jonathan not only hailed Chukwuma for the courage of venturing into an industry many ran away from, but also assured him of government's patroage from the government.
